View Full Version : Unlocked my XP 1800
OK: here it is- I unlocked my XP, and so far so good!
Method used: Defogger repair kit, tape, time
Time to complete: approx 2 hours (drying time mostly)
Results: Success! Now running at 1666mhz! SiSoft benches attached, with Motherboard Monitor temps.
I'm not sure if I got all 5 well enough (?!). I'm running at the 12.5/13 multiplier, and when I tried the 14 and 15 I got 667 and 733! Don't quite understand that, but.............
Temps are low because I haven't put the case back together yet.
This CAN be done!!! This is the second cpu I've unlocked, and it went fine (so far! Fingers are crossed!)

It will be sooo nice when someone has some pics, and a "step - by - step" of how they did it. I've read so much now, I'm scared to touch it ;)

looks good but those sisoft scores are a little low are they not? I have a 1.4Ghz @ 1.585Ghz atm and the scores are only a little lower (4490/2130)
Not doubting you or anything, but an 1800XP+ overclocked to a whopping 1.67Ghz should have scored higher.
Can you show us a screenie of WCPUID with the SSE support?

OMG Mr B, that score is insane! On my rig I get 4490/2130 and I thought that was good.
Glad too see a score closer to what I thought the XP would get. I still think that I made the right choice getting a 1.4Ghz rather than a 1.53Ghz XP. Price/Performance ratio much better.
OOoh OOh can you show me your memory benchies on SiSoft Mr B? Highest I've ever got is 823Mb/1004Mb / sec. Of course I dont have anywhere near that for the sake of stability :(
Why would you have to unlock an XP 1800+ to get to 1666 MHz? Since it defaults at 1533, with a multiplier of 11.5 all you'd have to do to get there is set the FSB at 145 MHz. Since I'm running at 154 MHz now on my Shuttle AK31, I could hypothetically get to 1771 MHz just plugging in an XP 1800+.
Since I've heard they tend to top out at 1700 MHz anyway, what's the point of unlocking it? Seems like a waste of time.
Hmm.. guess these guys are puffing.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. Not bad for the 1600.

yea that first one seems low???
at my 1.55ghz i get a pr ratin go 2447 and his is at 1666 and only 2200+ that is a little sluggish but good job on the unlocking
congrats Mr B, those scores are sick as usual

Holy cow you have a lot of background programs running! Just look at that cluttered systray! :)
Just keep in mind that AthlonOC exaggerates a bit. Since they don't provide any explanations of what their "OC tests" involve, for all we know they may just do "post" tests. As usual they provided no test setup info and don't show any benchmark results or even state that the CPUs could even load Windows. Who knows, they might have motherboards sitting on a table in a walk-in refrigerator and then just see if they can bring up the BIOS screen. So you usually have to back of a bit (5% or so) from their figures for a speed the CPU can actually run at.
Well I've 'only' got an XP1500 o/c to 1.5Ghz (150x10) but it chugs along very nicely and 100% stable (after 24 hours Prime95 is happily ticking along). It's cooled by an Alpha Pep66 and I don't really wanna mess around with unlocking the bridges or upping the FSB at least for now.
Mr B's scores are what you'd expect for a 1.7GHz o/c. My Sisoft fpu/cpu benchies are 4192/2063 which is 13% behind Mr B's, as my 1.5Ghz o/c is 13% behind his 1.7 one.

PS I think I need to update my sig :p
Hmmm....
Yeah, the systray IS a bit cluttered...lol. I've got a few oddball proggies running...I've got the Zone Alarm for the broadband, at the end, is a bit of shareware I picked up a long time ago, called "Chronograph". It synchronizes your PC's clock with an atomic clock via the internet...so you don't have to manually reset the clock if it's off...=) Weatherbug is a neat one too...gives me the current weather and local forcasts (that's the blue "temp" reading in the pic, outside weather temp, not my CPU temp..lol)
Thanks for the "congrats", BTW... =) I love this new rig! Beats the stuffing out of my P/// 700E @ 968.
Anyways...here's a memory benchie... The MSI doesn't seem to have much in the way of settings in the BIOS for this..:( I'm running 256MB of Micron PC2100, and the available settings are set to;
SDRAM Frequency: HCLK (DRAM = Host Clock)
CAS# Latency: 2 (default is 2.5)
Bank Interleave: 4 way
1T Command: Enabled
I thought I might get a higher score, but I'm not sure if its due to the fact I'm only running 256MB, or I should set these settings differently...:(
Here's the SS of the benchie...:D
I took the day off from work today (hey, sometimes ya just need a "Mental Health day...lol)...
Think I'll go pick up a 2nd stick of 256MB, and see what that does for me...:)
Your scores look right to me if the MSI 266 pro uses a 266 chipset not the 266+.
Sell the board and buy a amd 761 ot 266+ ;)
Adding more memory wont make the score go higher.

I'm actually looking at that AK31 and one of the EPoX mobo's...(can't recall the model (?) ).
Would the one you mention be better than those? I know the 266+ is much better than the 266...;)
So...save the $$ towards a new board, then?? Thanks!
Well I just gave chipsets.
The amd 761 is used in the Epox 8k7a and others, you can see Skip's scores in his post in the general discussion section.
The 266a is used in the Epox 8kha+ and shuttle ak31 rev 3.

Yeah, yeah...those are the two I've been looking at...lol
Thanks! I'll have to go searching about for some prices..:D
Just got back from out of town-
The probable reason my scores are lower than expected:
FSB was left at 133(266), and everything in that system right now is OLD except cpu/mobo(which is not great) and a cheap 256mb stick of of micron pc2100.
Also the fact that this is just the third system that I've really oc'ed and I CATEGORICALLY REFUSE to spend extra money for the overclock: What I can get with cheap, generic components is my goal.
Note: The above statement will most likely change as soon as I max this thing out with cheap stuff, thereby wasting extra money! <lol>
ALSO: I just found WCPUID, here it is at an updated 1.7Ghz(scores still lower than Mr. B- me and my cheap components!
I'm actually looking at that AK31 and one of the EPoX mobo's...(can't recall the model (?) ).
Get the AK31!
It's Great

Mr. B,
I might be able to help you bring that memory score up about 100. Mine is running right now at 890/810 right now. Im checking stability right now realtime. Im going to let it run until be get back from my sons football game and I will let you know.
