View Full Version : Made a mistake.
Bought a XP mobile notebook cpu by mistake, is it possible to run it in a desktop with the right MB or socket adaptor? If so where would I be able to get hold of either devices.

I'm pretty sure you don't need an adapter or anything, it should just plug right in and OC great!
Its not a socket A thats the problem, its a notebook processor.

hmm got a link to where/what you bought?>
Athlon XP mobile1800........My original idea was to make a very economic desktop just for surfing.

Hmm...regardless of whether it is a notebook processor or not, it should fit in any Socket 462 board. I remember reading about a lot of people buying Athlon XP-M Barton CPUs and putting them in desktops.

Note: Just re-read your thread and realize you already know it will fit in the socket. Don't worry about it; Windows will identify it as "AMD Athlon(tm) XP-m 1800+" processor, and everything will work like nothing's wrong. Depending on the motherboard, it should have no problem either.

send it back and get the right one...
I assumed you lot as overclockers would have some sense, but it seems you can be impossibly aloof and ignorant. The processor has this number on it ..Amd Athlon tm AXMD1800gjq4c......And it isn't socket A.

Check the specs and see the socket type, and it should fit the corresponding desktop mobo.
Have tried this with Amd http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_1260_3734,00.html Only to get this.http://www.amd.com/athlonxp/support Which doesn't help at all.
So who can give me advice?

guys its not gonna work in a normal mobo, and as far as I know there is no socket adapter that will work with this cpu for a normal mobo
Its this processor http://www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-auctions.showitem/itemId-6794413013/ffe567da.html

That is a mobile athlon 1800. 35w version, uPGA package which means its pin compatible with socket a, but smaller.
AFAIK there are no desktop mobos that can take that cpu. Maybe there is a adapter somewhere... I would send it back.
Edit: dicecca112 beat me to it.

Yes that looks similar, there are no rubber pads on mine either.

So without getting an old notebook/mobile to take the board out of I.m stuffed. Thanks for helping me get there.

If you have no possibility of returning the cpu, you could try to sell it at ebay or similar.
