Going to start a network

Ok ive never had a network or really used one unless you count the uni's lol!

Anyway this is my whole plan, im going to use the second machine as a backup and copying machine so i can still use my computer as i copy ;)

Now here is the question, as soon as i buy a network card for the second machine (i actually have two but there both different connections! Grr...) can i use the same monitor as the main computer one? have some kind of switch or something? so if i wan to use the other i just switch it over lol and vice versa (im not buying another monitor no point!) Both computers are on more or less all the time and i use it most days of the week for everthing work, gaming and copying so being able to do this would be great! Especially on a second machine! it's mostly going to be to backup work ive done and then copying on the side no fuss kind of machine if you get my drift :)

ok then another thing...

if in the future i wanted to use it as a personal server so i can grab and upload my work how would i go around it? what sort of software would i need? it would grab it's connection from my main computer i think

Im guessing your wanting to have just a folder that you can put your files in, and not have to switch monitors or whatever. If thats right, you will just want to share a folder on the secondary computer and then you can map a network drive to it on your main comp.

no i will need to switch monitors when i want to copy and stuff if it was just anotehr folder i could do that i recon but i also want to copy through the machine unless the is a program that i can use on my main computer that tells the otherone i want to copy and what not ive seen prgramis on mobiles where you can control a computer that would be better ;)

You can make share folders on networks that let other computers be able to write to the folder, so you could just copy something from yours onto your other computer without having to do anything on the other one. Is that what you're after?

As for controling the other computer, VNC is what you might be after. Check out this website

kind of but not fully i know through a network i can access folder and grab and write to that folder and what not and thats one thing i'll be doing to my work folder

but i will also install my dvd writer in the machine and copy dvd's through that machine so either a monitor switcher or a program where i can access the other computer from my main computer and start the buring application and start buring would be great if you understand?
