ok, i have a computer that is on my LAN, but becuse of the extra $5/month charge for additional IP's, i dont want to get internet access for it (it really doesnt need it).
ill make this easy to understand. comp1 is computer with internet, comp2 is computer on network without internet.
so my question, is there a way i can run F@H on comp2? could i map comp1 on comp2, so i could run the fah.exe on comp2 as "-local"? would this allow me to not need internet for computer 2?
anyone understand what i'm asking?

You don't need another IP address. Just setup a proxy server on your PC connected to the internet and have your 2nd PC use the first PC's internet access. Im not sure how to set this up but im sure someone else or there are documents and freeware proxy servers available on the internet.

ugh, i know you can do stuff like that, but i would really rather not mess with that at all. the only reason this needs internet is for folding. thats IT. so, if it can work with the -local switch, that would be cool.
I think it's been tried before, but no one has been able to make it work. But by all means, let us know if you get it working! :) Here's a thread (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36436&highlight=ICS) regarding using Internet connection sharing to give your other computers access. It's really pretty easy to set up, especially in Win2K. Good luck!

Well then do it this way....
share your computers hard drive out. The one on the internet that is. Then install it on that pc. Share out your folding at home directories and run it from the seperate computer.
You might have to run FAH on the internet PC just to DL the stuff then close it and reopen it through network neighborhood ont he second PC.
How does it upload the finished work? Do you then have to close fah on the second PC and reopen it on the host to upload your finished product and download more work? Or does it somehow initiate the connection when you're finished? Sounds like a LOT more work than setting up ICS. My 2 cents.

acutally, that was what i was talking about.
i want to run fah.exe from another comp....
so computer 1 will have fah.exe on it. it will run it locally, AND, the second computer will run it from a mapped drive. (it will run it with the -local extension). from what i understand, this will not need to have an internet connection then.

The only problem i forsee is that you might have to run it from the local workstation to download the WU's then close it and reopen from the mapped drive on the other workstation to get it to chug away at it.

Right... that's what I thought. My only question is, if you already have you two computers networked, why not go the extra step and install ICS? Then, whenever your second workstation is done with it's work, it can automatically upload the work product and get new work. The way cowanrg is describing it, and I absolutely agree it's possible to do this, if computer 2 finishes its work and there's no one around to restart it from your main computer, it just sits there waiting. I pretty sure that if you run it locally from a mapped drive you'll have to reopen it on comp 1 to upload the work. But hey, I've been wrong before... give it a try. Good luck!
