As we all gather here to get help, show off or just simply check out others overclocking achievements. I'm looking at it and think is it all Neccisary HELL YEAH its fun but.....
I bought my rig about 2 years ago....
As of now it can play all games on full graphics not overclocked but with Doom III when AA is sometimes it goes a bit slow however still perfectly playable.
Ive looked at the results and the new rigs and setups WIPE THE FLOOR with 3dMARK '05 and any other benchmark you throw at it. Very Unlike 2 years ago. It's a tech overload everything is getting alot better very fast.
Basically, my question is....Is there any game out there in the mainstream market that either takes advantage of this speed and the features or needs them to run alright......???

Ever played Rome: Total War? Many systems still have a hard time running the game, and F.E.A.R. seems to be troublesome for even the newest systems too. We overclock for two things: To push things to the limits and to help us run the new software better without having to upgrade (Hence, getting the most out of the money we paid for these things). Or at least, that's my thought on it anyways.

BF2, Quake
Anyways, let's say your system can run Doom III great with max settings, and it's still two years old. But if you buy the same system for the same amount you spent two years ago, you can play Doom III AND do other stuff in the background, not that you would while playing a game.
But yeah, I don't think there's a game currently that can take the full 100% potential of any CPU, but most of the higher end CPUs can run games at FULL and MAX settings, AND also do other things in the background, like maybe burning a cd, using like 6 different messengers, encoding some song clearly, and other things....all at once.
Therefore, that's the difference between your computer and newer ones, both can run Doom III at max settings, but can yours run Doom III AND Doom II at max settings? (lol, bad example, but you get it)

As much as id like a new system im almost ready to get my licence so 3000$ AUD can be better spent elsewere.....
Pity that i wanted 2 X850 Crossfires so i can anti-alias Mario Brothers World 3......guess ill have to wait.....lol :p
You can't have too much power....MoooHaHa! :D
I haven't had any issues with cpu power since my Axp-m running at 2.5ghz+, it could do everything I wanted done in a reasonable amount of time, but I was disappointed with my gaming experience, I was running a 6800nu and I like to run games at high res which I wasn't able to with the 6800nu, so the reason I want more is to go to a game store and just pic the game I want without having to look at the min requirements to see if my pc is up to the task.

Hehe, F.E.A.R. I needed something to test a little gaming machine I setup for my nephew to play BF1942 (along with his grandpa, my dad) on. Well I downloaded the F.E.A.R. demo from Fileplanet. The machine is using the following:
Epox 8rda+ (I recapped this board recently)
Athlon 1.133Ghz T-Bird (stock)
512MB PC3200 Ram (stock)
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600xt (stock)
Would you believe me if I told you I could play that game on the machine. It isn't perfect, but it's pretty close to fine. A few frame skips here and there, but not too bad.

I don't game at all, but I still need as fast of a rig as I can get my hands on for audio production. Pretty much any system I have will get used to around 75% CPU utilization, and this would still be with compromises (like bouncing audio tracks with the plug-ins "printed" to free up CPU power). A faster PC will only alow more DSP procesing, and higher sample rates, and it will still run out of juice during very intense scenarios, requiring "bouncing" tracks, etc.
So, I agree with JimmyG - you can't have too much power :D. The PC industry is not ONLY for gamers and getting the highest FPS rates for "fun". I totally agree that Gaming has advanced many facets of PC architecture, but there are many many intense professional applications for powerful PC's, and these also demand constant PC advancements.
Also, with some of the newer OS concepts, it looks like the Video section of a PC will become even MORE important, as new OS's will rely on vectoring and GPU processing just to run the OS's GUI (opposed to current "bitmap" OS GUI technology). This would not be possible if the Gaming industry did not have such a huge demand for ultra-fast Video components and architecture that we are seeing today.
More power, please :)

I'm sure it's playable, but how about on max settings @ 1024x768? :D

Well comeon :-D. I was just half suprised to even start the game on the machine. No, it can't run F.E.A.R. at max settings, but it'll be perfect for my nephew and BF1942. I may even put BF2 on there for him too. It's not a bad little machine at all :).

play any modern game at 1920x1200 and then you'll see why you need to upgrade.

Far Cry needs both a high end GPU and a fast CPU. If you don't have both, the AI suffers even if you have great looking graphics.
is there a special version of farcry w/dualcore support? :D
