I'm planning on ordering some random parts pretty soon (rounded cables, compunurse...etc) and I'm going to put a fan on my side panel with a duct to my hsf. I just had some questions for people that have done this.

1. What size fan? - I'm thinking about a 120mm, but I dont know if thats overkill for this purpose. I'm at least getting a 92.

2. Fan inside the case, or outside? I read an article in the tips section where a guy put it on the outside, I guess to have more room for the duct, but it was ugly :)

3. That article also said he took his fan off the heatsink. Is this a good idea, or would you leave both on for the off chance one fails maybe?

One other thing, how should i attach the thermistor of the compunurse to the side of the core? I don't want to buy a whole thing of epoxy for the little bit I'll use.

I can only answer one of these...
Get a 120mm fan. If it is too loud, you can tame it with a rheostat, but it will still push air better than a smaller fan.

1. What size fan?

120mm is overkill, but definately worth the time to install. My friend has a 120mm on the top of his case. It completely removes all deadzones even with the side panel on. I would do the same to mine, but i've got enough smaller fans in mine :)

2. Fan inside the case, or outside?

Outside is always better because you draw the cooler air into your hot case. By doing this you reduce the system temperature which should even reduce your cpu temperatures.

3. That article also said he took his fan off the heatsink. Is this a good idea, or would you leave both on for the off chance one fails maybe?

It is a bad idea to take off the smaller fan because the smaller fan blasts the heatsink to remove the heat from the fins. The larger fan can then help remove that hot air from the heatsink. A high rated cfm fan would not have enough blast to strip a lot of heat from the heatsink. This is why delta 60mm fans are so effective.

One other thing, how should i attach the thermistor of the compunurse to the side of the core? I don't want to buy a whole thing of epoxy for the little bit I'll use.

I think the best idea is some electrical tape. Basically, anything static free & non-conductive. Make sure it stays where it is placed too.
