View Full Version : Vantec CCK6035D - Ugly
I recently purchased this heatsink and I was greatly disapointed.
here are the reasons.
1) The heatsink only gave me about 2-3 degrees over the stock HSF that came with my 1.4Ghz Retail that I bought. Depending on if I left the case open ore closed.
2) the reviews state that it has the fins pressed together and welded to the base. Mine is pressed but does not look welded except at the four corners. :(
3) If I took the delta off the heatsink and put the stock fan on to drop the noise level down it went up over the temp of my stock HSF. Actually got about 1-1.5 degree hotter.
All temperatures checked with both CPUCool and Asus Probe.
I'm running the 1.4 on an ASUS A7A266 rev 1.03 board with the 1007 bios patch installed.
Any info would be greatly apreciated.
Has anyone else had problems wit this HSF combo?
Thanks

Dude, that sucks.
Did you use Arctic Silver?
It is strange, but sometimes a cheap HSF will do a good job, and there is no need to upgrade. I did think that your Vantec was a good one, though.
I am happy with my Volcano 5, although I would suggest a Volcano6Cu, because the price is not much higher.
Anyway, try re-seating your HSF with some new paste, see if that helps.
I've tried with two different thermal pastes. Both of which I've used before on my old system without any problems at all. I have some artic silver II on order but it will probably be aweek or so before I get it. I have to return the vantec soon if I want to get my money back. That's the thing that sucks!
I did some more tests today with the system and my Retail HSF seems to still be the best overall performer. 2 degree's for $40 just ain't worth it, and from what I"ve heard about the AS thermal paste it will only give me an extra degree or two. and if that's the case I can just slop it on under my stock HSF and be doing as good as the Vantec!
So Unless I here of a really good idea to try I think I'm back to using the Stock setup.
Does that volcano series still have that nasty twist on clip? I didn't like that thing! I have a golden orb around here somewere that never got used because of that thing! :)
Thanks again

My volcano 5 has a nice, standard clip. You just use a flat head screw driver to clip it on. Easy, simple.
I like it.
Anyway, sorry about your experience. BTW, there are alot of great reviews of HSFs out there, do some looking and see what you like. There are some great ones out there, but none as cheap as a good Volcano, go with the 6Cu.

best place to come when you want to buy a new heatsink is here, just for info. some people are still buying orbs!
dude that HSF is only rated for like 1.33Ghz, i also have this HSF and is rulz the temp dropped 50% when put this HSF on compared to a stock cooler for my P3800...i'm suprised u noticed any temp decrease seeing as it's rated for only 1.33Ghz. It's a great HSF for pentium users, but i can see it might not be good enough for AMD users AMD CPU's run hot as hell.
That is definately an interesting point. As the box, my fan came in was marked as having a rating for up to 1.5Ghz. not the 1.33Ghz like you mention. But that would definately be a good reason for the bad performance I was getting.
I've spent the last few days testing out almost all the HSF I can get locally I tested 4 now all rated for 1.5+ and the only one that was better then the stock unit sofar was the vantec, but only if I left the delta on. And for me +-2 degrees is not worth that stupid delta blowing a hole in my case. God is that thing loud. :)
I actually returned the HSF yesturday. ( along with 2 others ) One place won't let me return the HSF even though they originally said I could. ( no more Richard business for them! ) I am now looking around for something better. I here the Thermalright sk6 or the Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu/6Cu+ are good fans but I'm starting to wonder if they will do the job on a 1.4Ghz T-Bird. Anyone, have a GOOD thing to say about 1.4+ Air Cooling? :D
Water block maybe! :) I just don't know if I can afford the time or money to either make or buy a water cooling set-up. (It would be so quiet though. Sigh) Does anyone know of a place a person can get a GOOD quality yet affordably priced Water cool kit that will do my CPU justice?
Now here's a question for water block users of AMD 1.4+Ghz machines.
Does the processor produce enough heat to keep the water block from forming condensation on and around the socket? Or is it recomemded to seal the socket anyways? The above is asuming you have my processor equivalent.
Ok, I've now writen a novel and knowone will want to read it! :p
Thanks anyone that replies!

My bro has that heatsink on his duron 850.... cranked it up to 1003 and temp was 36 celsius load.... this was with 1.6 volts tho.... i think they are good heatsinks, not in same league as an SK6 or swiftech but good for the money.
Watercooling: dont worry about condensation if you will be using a straight radiator set up, the water cannot go below ambien temps.... you need to worry when using peltiers/and/or evaporator towers.
