Well I had to remove the DVD Drives from all my Video Servers. Needed a
place to put a couple more Big Hard Drives. Now I am caught with a small
problem, I need one. Some of my movies are on DVD and I am needing to
find a way to have access to those without having to run to my main comp
just to add a movie.

I finally settled on a Ghettocustom DVD Drive(?) PC. A lack of better description
makes me call it that. :D

The specifications for this system will call for using a "forgotten" DVD Player
box (I think I may be in trouble again)

water cooling-
ultra miniature W/C system with:
Custom 5v pump :D could rebuild with Copper parts, I wont need any
high flow, just to move heat around a bit.
ultra custom Radiator,
Custom Super Thin all copper Waterblock & chipset cooling,
additional ghettofabricated Mosfet cooling to handle low airflow,
and of course it has to be quiet.

MATX Motherboard, VIA CPU will do.. I only need to use this for the DVD Drive (or
burner). 800Mhz is enough.
Customized PSU. (Standard size will not fit) whats the fun if I have to buy
one that will fit!
Rebuild Custom DVD Drive. possibly W/Burning capability. The origional drive
in the DVD Player is not even remotely IDE compatible.
absolutely must not change anything of the front panel (some buttons
may not work after... 'guaranteed' )
Last - - it must Fold!!

Don't expect this project to be finished fast. I have two other to finish first,
but this one will be done along with the others as I have time and leftover
parts available; usually a lot...Heh heh heh....

The Victim: Toshiba DVD Player. It works, Just no sound (I know why :) )
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC1.jpg

Back: I can change what I want here.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC3.jpg

Inside: Lots of room to do as I need!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC2.jpg

In this last picture, I was seeing how I could fit in a stripped down PSU
(its the one being used in my Alien PC Project) With a little planning and
careful use of a generous portion of my favorite modding mesh, it will be
safe to use here.

Managed to locate a few small things I will need:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC4.jpg

The pump: A 5V pump, purchased from "Walgreens Drug Stores"... Yea...
you read that right, Walgreens. They start out as a battery operated
fountain 2/$10.

The Res: is a 125mm glass cylinder, 28mm diameter. I use these as test
tubes for my 'other evil experiments' :p when I have my mini-clean room
running. (nothing illegal, I only clone various rare plants if I get them)
I think the only bling, that nobody will actually see, will be to have an LED
or two lighting this thing up. Just for fun...

The coppercap: will become a miniature waterblock for the VIA CPU.
seems these CPUs are able to handle high temps reasonably well, If anyone
has ever seen the stock Heatsinks for these, you will understand that anything
will be better.

Now we all just have to sit back and wait. I am still working on the lighting controller
and custom radiator for my Alien PC project. No matter what, there
will be updates on something :D

What if you just used copper tubing thoughout the inside, and that will be the res, rad, AND tubing all in one. :D

begin localized rant
 Darned (Expletive Deletable, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto...) ISP!!
The last couple of days they have been waaay bad not keeping
their stuff going right. Now I am getting one of these "we don't
know whats wrong, but we are fixing it" (sort of  ) pages every
time I try to log in to get to my files and post some pictures.

I have pics, just cant get at them for a smallish update...

I think I am going to have to let my own server on the internet now.
At least that does not fail as much as my current ISPs servers...

/End rant

Finally!! I can get to my files!! after only 5+ hours of waiting...
Pardon the pics, I was playin with the new camera/phone I got.

I will be trying to reuse as much as I can from inside this box.
After all, I have to keep it looking origional. so nearly everything
will be saved, Unless I have no use for it ;)
This picture is the power plug at the back. This will go since I
will be using the plug from the PSU to replace this.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC01.jpg

This is the power supply board from inside..
for some reason, this unit interests me.. not sure exactly why
right now. something to build?.......
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC02.jpg

all the parts are out/off the box now. Just have to sort them and
figure out what will be going back or whatever..
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC03.jpg

This is a picture of the DVD Drive support bracket and the door cover
seems this stuff will be useable as well.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC04.jpg

The Little switches on this circuit board can be reused easily.
(the white dots) seems that I only need to clone a basic blank
for this board and then re-wire them to suit my needs on this
'drive' unit. :grins:

This Mod is looking easier to do than I thought!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC05.jpg

Now to get my Dremel busy. Heh..heh..heh....
More pics later this morning..

Another Picture of the old DVD players Power supply board. Like I said
it interest me, HMmmm....
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC07.jpg

The DVD drive in the case. Most parts are Edible. Well maybe not, but the
feet should be able to get fitted on a new DVD Drive.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC09.jpg

Side view of the DVD Drive. Not much to save here, Except the Frame. It
will need extensive cutting to make this work. Guess I will have to get
started on the measurements

Finally had time to do some work on the DVDdrive PC, Spent the last week with teh wife in the hospital.

So here it is:

measured (twice) and marked where the back plate for the motherboard
should be mounted. This area is where the motherboard back plate will be
mounted. (crosses fingers)...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC34.jpg

And a slow finish on the cutting, we have now achieved hole.... (huh?)
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC36.jpg

Now for a miracle...
It fits loosely, I thought I measured well enough. Not bad for eyeballing the
level placement here. The plate fit a little too loose so I ended up glueing it
in place with a little JBWeld. Actually looks good now..
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC35.jpg

ghettocomp
09-26-05, 07:04 AM
Now the back panel has been fastened on the the bottom of the case
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC31.jpg

on with other stuff to do...
the brass motherboard mounts would not fit towards the front (back of
the case actually) very well, so I ended up using my old standby.. wallboard
plugs. when cut in half, they are slightly longer than the brass standoffs, and
old the mobo up as well.
A quick pic of them mounted to the back of the motherboard.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC30.jpg

At the back of the case I mounted the brass standoffs to hold the motherboard
firmly in place.
This blurred craptastic pic is marked to show a couple of them in place:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC32.jpg

The brass standoffs were placed in such a way as to firmly hold the
motherboard against the plate and not cause any shorting of components
Here is a shot of the motherboard after being mounted on the standoffs:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC33.jpg

Not bad for only eyeballing the mounting points!

upcoming plans:
Remove PSU from its case and mount inside this one, Remove the existing
80mm fan and then adding small 60mm fan to circulate air over heatsinks.
then cage the thing in mesh to prevent any contact from any object which
may come loose.

Routing copper tubing through case to 'create' a radiator body. This is where
the case itself will become the radiator. There will be some limited fan action
going on to have some airflow inside and assist the coolig process.

Also to be made is the Coppercap waterblocks for the chipset and CPU.
following THAT will be teh res design. I am thinking I may have to put some of it
on the outside back of the case, there will be almost no room inside for it.

Nice.

Hope your wife is well.

The thing that is going to get some of this project interesting, will be the use of a full
size DVD Drive (maybe). I believe I may have to remove the drive from its case and
sort of 're-engineer' the remaining body to mount inside this DVD player case.
Not sure yet as how. I might end up actually having to spend money again, just
to buy a slim DVD Drive, Even then it may get stripped from its case.
OH Maaan... how I hate to do that. :D

Figured this morning that I had a little time so I began to take the DVD drive I wanted to use apart

http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC38.jpg

Horror of horrors, I see It won't fit..
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC39.jpg

after getting the DVD case removed from the mechanism, I found it still
waaay too big to sit properly inside. DAayuumm.. Now I have to go and
spend money. Thought I was going to get away with only having to purchase
a notebook Harddrive, now I need a slim DVD Rom as well.

Since I can't work with the DVD parts yet, On to the cooling system. The pump..
available from Walgreens Drug Stores as a small battery operated fountain. Not
the best choice, but I wanted something fun to work with. Size IS everything.. :D

To get this started, I located a small Brass Fingerpull, used for most home closet doors
this one is the 1/2inch size, and it fits perfectly on the intake for the pump
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC40.jpg
as you can see, it will work out fine here...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC43.jpg

The next step is to drill out a 1/4 inch hole to match the 1/4"OD copper tube
I will be using.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC42.jpg

and when soldered on to the pull, you have a intake cap, nearly ready to go..
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC41.jpg

The last picture of this post is showing how the cap is to be placed and I
have taped it to the end while the JBWeld is allowed time to harden.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC44.jpg

The second picture hints as to what i will be doing with the pump once the
JBWeld epoxy has hardened :D
both the intake and outs on the pump have tubing already attached. This is
to prevent any possibility of breakage after everything is assembled and ready
to be used. This last step will take a couple of days to complete. Both the Epoxy and the
Plastic Dip need at least 24hours to cure completely. then will
be the 72 hour leak test. ::crosses fingers::

threeme2189
09-27-05, 02:02 PM
i just hope the frikkin drive fits...and if not then use an external one...i guess...

ghettocomp
09-28-05, 05:54 PM
As of this morning the JBWeld epoxy has completely cured.
this crappy pic is of the pump before the plastic coating it will recieve:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC45.jpg

So now I have been dipping the pump in the plasti-dip. after two coats. it is looking fairly
secure against any leaks ::again crosses fingers::
looks pretty scary right now...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC46.jpg
Leak testing will begin tonight, maybe tomorrow and will run for around 72 hours. I want to see if the pump motor heats up or if any leaks develop.

The pump has been finished and is in the process of being tested
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/DVDPC/DVDPC47.jpg
The power is cut to around 3volts but still has enough flow to keep the rig
cool. Cant wait to finish the radiator.
I have decided that I am going to have the radiator placed under the unit,
and all air will exhause through the bottom. at the back of the case I will be adding
an intake grill with a filter, too much dust here for anything else. :D

09-29-05, 07:20 PM

The 4 days of Running the pump flat out on 3Volts and 5Volts is finally over!. it ran for 2.5 days on the batterys in the above pic, then I tapped the 5V lines from my computer and ran the pump (small reduction in amps) the rest of the time. The necessary mods work great with absolutely no chance of leaks. Now to modify the glass res and finish the radiator body (actually copper tubes mounted under the unit)
I can then post some more actual progress pics! :D
