I currently have a Voodoo5 and am going to get a new video card soon, I am stuck between the Ati Radeon 8500 or the Asus Geforce 3 Deluxe. I have seen bench marks on both cards and the both are verry impressive. I can get the asus for $350 and the Ati for $300, Which would you guys choose and why?
Thanks for the help.

C'mon no one has any prefference?
id choose the ati, simply because its equal in performance but also has industry best dvd playback and excellent 2d quality......plus its cheaper:)

I'd also go ATI... gotta support them or they'll die and prices will go up. :(

Ati....thats just my preference....i see very little 3d performanc edifference between these two cards but i do see crisp clear graphics on my dads ATI powered computer and fuzzy un sharp graphics on my geforce2 computer....i like crisp and clear....

I would think that immage quality would be more dependant on your monitor than your grafics card, as in MUCH more dependant.
As for ATI vs NVidia, i would wait for an overclocking report on that Radion. I haven't read anything about overclocking it yet, so i am curious.
As for proformance, ATI wins in several senthetic benchmarks, but when it comes to real games nvidia seems to win hands down.
ATI also has some major proformance issues in their drivers and a reputation for not fixing them.
ATI IS cheaper, but if your overclocking then it probably is not cheaper.

Overclocking
Being cooled, this card worked flawlessly at 310/295(590) MHz of the core and memory. I think, the ATI's new chip has an excellent potetial. The memory didn't speed up much. Nevertheless, taking into account that the card is well balanced, an increase of the GPU frequency is preferable.
this is according to digit-life.com.....
about the monitors i have a 17in trinitron and my dad has a 19in samsung...could be the monitors...i dunno....i know for a fact my dad wont give me his :(.....but it didnt look this fuzzy back when i had the ati video card in my comp.....but my dads comp looks absolutely beutiful at 1280x724....
Morphoius: its a well known fact that ati has the better image quality. has nothing to do with monitors(maybe a little with individual cases). but if you took the exact same systems with the same monitors, stuck a gf2 in one and a radeon in the other, put em side by side i garauntee youll see a difference.
ati has always focused more on visual quality than speed(where nvidia does the opposite), and the result is a noticable difference in the clarity, sharpness and richness of the video(expecially in 2d).

If fps isn't so big problem and you don't want make an fps war with your friend buy ATI. :) They are cheaper, as fast as their other cards at it's class (MX) and very good when you are playing movies. After all if your friend has 80 fps and in the same game you have 70 isn't problem because you may have better display :)

Go with the ATI Radeon 8500 or 7500. Better 2 d video quality clarity and the best dvd playback available in a pc. Gaming the Radeon 8500 will beat the G3 and it will beat the new G ti500. New drivers have just been released for the Radeon, ATI used to have driver issues but now that is more a thing of the past.
I have a ATI radeon 64 ddr vivo and I love it, never had a driver issue and I am now using the latest released driver by ATI in XP os. Bets bang for the buck especially when you can get the Raeon 8500 for $203 US at www.dell.com but you may have to wait a bit for it to be shipped but that is a smoking deal, regular price there is $253. Why pay more for less thats my question.

Because he bought it when the Radeon 8500 wasnt out? And he's open-minded enough to realize theres a better overall card than his.
***i really dont know why he said it, but this is my opinion of what hes saying, if im way off, tell me :))

You are having a laugh aren't you? What new drivers exactly? And are you honestly saying the 8500 doesn't have driver issues? Even the blindest most biased fanATic has had to admit there are problems. What about the OEM cards being clocked lower too? What about the 350 RAMDAC instead of 400? Smoothvision (what's that, it ain't working bud).
Ti ...
Just GeForce has been such a good brand and I know that ATI maybe some what in the lead now but once nVidia gets good effective drivers their card become a kick arse card...

what you guys dont get is that these cards are just immamture wait a month or two and the radeon 8500 will be a lot bettter....ATI certainly shouldve waited.......however it is still a superior card hardware wise and ATI will fix the drivers....in fact they have just released new drivers for all their cards down to the rage128 cards (WinXP/2000).........
edit....they are there or are coming......look at the driver pages at ATI.........
it may be that they released it to early but now what about all the people that went out and bought and found out that the card sucks. So now they are gonna go and tell everyone they know how bad it is and how they couldn't get it to work with anything. maybe ati really hurt themself.....

Well i would go for the Ge-Force3, but then again i am going to be a little biased as i have one myself. I only know that NVIDIA are the largest players in Video Cards now and for this reason games producers will make NVIDIA chipsets 1st priority for testing their games and optimizing fully for these boards. This is not to say that other cards are not tested and suported just companies will tend to lean better support for the products that are popular.
Of course, games producers wouldn't say this to you...
Also another thing to consider is driver support. NVIDIA are world renown for releasing excellent drivers which further push the performance of the video card to new levels as a driver is released, ATI are not.
Even non owning NVIDIA people will agree that this is to be true about NVIDIA and their drivers.
Finally there is the difference in cost, the Ge-Force3 is not a cheap card where as the ATI is more $ friendly!
At the end of the day i would say if you have the money go for the Ge-Force3. You would be better served with the games you WILL be able to play and with guaranteed support all along the way, and a fresh speed boost with the new release of drivers that come out. If you play a lot of games then having this level of support is a matter of necesity. NVIDIA are a big company that can put its money where its mouth is if need to and whats to say NVIDIA might not buy ATI out in the future? ;)
On the other hand if money is tight and you really can't push it for a Ge-Force3 then take the ATI which is not really at all bad but dont expect the same level of support as NVIDIA.
In the end, you get what you pay for...
Hope this helps?

ATI simply because the card's got potental. The chip also has newer technology than the GeForce3. Plus the company's also Candian Based since I'm canadian I got to help out a fellow Canadian and c'mon help out our economy. And I'm gonna doubt NiVidia is gonna buy out ATI.
i know the the Gforce and the Radeon have good graphics and i play games nonstop but i can't justify 200-400 on a video card! Im perfectly happy with my Gforce 2 :D

So you would advise buying a video card based on helping out your own economy? Well Nope, not me!:)
And I'm gonna doubt NiVidia is gonna buy out ATI.
Yes and i bet 3dfx owners didn't see that one coming too.

I agree with you dingo the Ge-Force3's are overpriced. I used to have a Ge-Force2 GTS64 and that was fast enough but the card developed a fault so i took it back and was fortunate enough to be asked if i would like another one or a new Ge-Force3 and pay the difference. Well for £100 i will have a Ge-Force3 anyday;), mind you i did pay £250 for my Ge-Force2 GTS64 11 months earlier.
And I'm gonna doubt NiVidia is gonna buy out ATI.
can we say monopoly?
if nvidia did that they would be killing themselves, there would be no one left to compete with and they would have to deal with the government. and when they have nobody left to compete with, what would be the use to release a new card every 6 months? :p

I agree. I don't think nVidia will buy out ATI. Besides consumers benefit most from competitions. It's like 2 divorced parents who try to be the kid's "favorite" by competing with each other who can spoil the kid more;) Anyway, as far as which to choose, I would wait(if you can)and see how ATI does with their drivers and support in the future. If you have to choose now i would get the GeForce because of the stability and compatibility.
