Linux loves external modems. Dial-up or DSL, external is the way to go.
I have set a few of these up in the past. Look for an ISA modem if your mobo has ISA slots. As of yet I have not seen a winmodem in ISA format. I pick these things up at computer shows for 15 to 20 bucks each. Another route is go with an external modem that hooks up via serial port these are all hardware modems to.
i was thinking of ordering this

what about v92 isn't that the better of the 2(v90)
My understanding is that anything external should work. You might want to have a look at http://www.linmodems.org to see if they say anything about it.
nihili
thanks
oh yea if any of you can give me a link to somewhere that sells a mandrake-linux 8.1 compatible modem i would greatly appreciate it.
Any ISA or external serial port modems are fine 99.999999999% are linux compatible.
ALL USB MODEMS ARE WINMODEMS - do not buy these if you are a linux user!!!
Ask specifically for a hardware PCI modem at a computer shop, or look out for adverts like "56k Hardware PCI modem" - usually £10 more expensive, but worth it.
i ordered the extrenal modem i put the link up to but from somewhere else. so hopefully everything goes well. i'm gonna have my friend who has a cable modem download mandrake 8.1 for me. i have 8 but thats old news now :)
i just need to find a semi decent sound card for really cheap that works with linux. damn you aureal!!!!!!!
thanks for everyones help.
I have ob AC97, 2 out of 3 kernels I try to compile don't like it. Go for sb16 if you aren't fussy. Its pretty much the standard
