I like the description for this BIOS upgrade:

# Update CPU microcode
# Update ICH5R RAID Option-ROM to version 6253

Anyone have any idea what the heck updating the CPU microcode means?

I assume the CPUID microcode update will allow us to use some
newer processors.

Does Updating the ICH5R firmware have any negative affects if there is an existing array? I know I'm not upgrading until someone can tell me there are no negative effects.

updated microcode means little fixes to what the name of the processor is and what frequency it runs at.

as far as the ICH5 firmware, they made it alot better in the boot stage and from benchmarks its alittle faster, in the real world, it seems like its alitte more responsive, but its barely noticable.

i recommend the update.

My machine is rock solid. I am not futzing with the BIOS until something out of the ordinary happens.

Maybe I'm just superstitious.
