using a fan controller with a pump?

I noticed that the Swiftech MCP650™ 12 VDC Pump can run at between 6 and 14 volts. I was wondering since i heard that the 650 is pretty loud that if you could plug it into a fan controller and lower the voltage, it wouldn't be so loud. I'm assuming that it wouldn't do any harm but only increase your temps but I was thinking of getting this instead of the 655...suggestions?

you can do it sice the total power consumption of the pump does not exceed the limit supported by the fan controller
