View Full Version : Put in new case fan. Good temp drop.

I recently posted a question asking about ducting my HSF from the rear of the case. I finished the hole tonight but decided to go with a 120mm fan first (possibly to duct later). The attached pic shows were I put the fan in. This is just behind my CPU.

Previously, the temps were 5-6C apart (last night, 29 CPU / 23 board). The temps are now equal at 26C each. I'm assuming the higher board temp is from the new airflow pattern not being as strong directly over the mobo thermistor which is below the Voodoo 5. 3C not too shabby, eh?

For reference, the case fan I used is an Enermax Thermo Control unit with a thermistor that regulates the speed. I cut this out and am running it at full speed (which, I believe, is somewhere around 3100 RPM). Got a 4 pack of these from ebay for $12.50.

A few more holes with the imitation Dremel, and I'm hoping to lower these just a bit more.

Excellent. Better cooling always good!

How loud are those fans at max speed?

I don't know. All I hear is my Delta. :)

I just stuck my ear about 2 inches from the side/rear of the case and could kinda hear it. It's not too bad, I think. Sounds the same as my off-brand 120s.

Also, an update on my board temp...

I chopped out the front fan "mesh" and also lengthened the slits in the front today. Board temp is down to 4C below CPU (current 26/22). Ambient is somewhere around 18.

I think you're right. Today, I raided some heatsinks and fans from an old copier that was headed for the dumpster. The sinks are headed for my clock generator and south bridge, and the fans will go in holes yet to be cut. :)

Have a really nice 24VDC squirrel cage fan that has a duct about the same size as my Gladiator. :D
