I just signed up and have it cranking! I just want to know how to sign up? When I go to the members page, where do I get the email address and my password they ask for? I'm I signed in automatically? Thanks for any help? Little confused.

Not a dumb question, I had to do my membership stuff 3 times. The last one may have been system problems but I'm pretty sure the first two were my fault.

Your email is the one you provided when you first ran the client, you then can get your password here (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/get_passwd.html) (it will be emailed to the email addy you provided) then once you have your password you can join here (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_join_form&id=94265). Our team site is loacted here (www.ocsetiteam.com) stats are posted weekly. If you are running the screen saver you may want to look into this (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/Instr1.htm) it is much faster. Also if you are just running the clc go there to see how to set up seti spy and seti driver. Hope this helps and an early welcome to the team.

Don't feel bad - it's a little odd joining a team if you aren't a Seti member yet. Before you can join a team you have to join Seti as a single member. After that they have the email address you suplied them, and a password they generate for you. Then you can join a team. So when you said you signed up - did you mean you joined Seti as a new member, or you joined the overclocker's team? I'm assuming you meant you just now started using Seti as a single member. If so you need to go here: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_join_form&id=94265 and use the same email address you used to first join Seti, and the password they sent you (Seti supplies a password, they don't let you pick one)

If you have never run Seti before you need to go here: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html Download the i386 winnt client and execute it in a folder of your choice. Choose the new user option. Use your email address, and follow the prompts for location, etc. Once you finish that you're signed up with Seti and you can join a team. You'll need the password they generate for you. It should be emailed to you, but if not you can use the first link I posted, and when you get to the prompt asking for a password, just click on the don't remember link and enter the email address you used to sign up. You should get the password in your email within an hour. Then you just go back to the team sign up and the rest should be pretty easy. Hope this helps. Let us know if this is not whay you needed.

Thanks for all the help.:) If you are running the screen saver I think I am, but I'm not sure. I let seti run all night. I just clicked the task bar icon and let it go. Is that the way to run the program?

Keep running it once you complete a few wu's we can tell by your average time if you are running the screen saver or clc.

I'm almost done. Do I have to be online to to submit my wu?

When you click to the taskbar, does the screen shows a pretty graph with lots of spikes? Then thats the screensaver version. With it you need to be online to transmit a WU.

Yes, I have the graph. I just submitted my first one. Is the clc version faster. This is kinda fun!:)

Most definately - the clc is much faster.

It took me 15 hours to complete my first wu. I'm at 40% on my 2nd, and I'm at just under 3 hours. I think I left the screensaver on last night! Learning by the minute!

One hint for running the screen saver (I did it for over a year, and had it all tweaked out). Don't let the actual "screen saver" portion show it's pretty head. It sucks away vast amount of processing time. Go into the screensaver properties of the SETI saver and tell it to blank at zero minutes. When the screen saver comes on, it dosen't draw the graph, and your times will drop like a rock. Either that, or set your screensaver to blank screen. Also, set in the acutal program's properties to "Data Analysis Always Runs". This will also greatly reduce processing times.

Oh yeah. Gotta put to rest the myth that has always floated around here. You CAN cache WUs with the screensaver! Granted, I've only found two programs (SETIMonitor and SETIGate), however both are really nice, and should do you good.

All this should get the screensaver at (near) maximum speed. Of course, then the only way to speed up is to get the CLC version. But if you have it totaly tweaked like I told how, it won't shave off too much. I only got 1 hour less time. And that's on my aincient computer. Faster computers will show less improvement with the upgrade from tweaked to CLC. If you want speed (like ever OCer does!) then go CLC. Of course, if you want to see the graph on occation, then keep the GUI. It isn't too much slower tweaked.

*Just had to present tips while he was running the GUI!*

Thanks for all the help and tips; seti is great!:) My second wu ended up being 6 hours and 42 minutes, a lot better than my first.

Whlie it is running do you see a command line window or this?

Basher, I definitely didn't see that. Do I have to download Seti Spy? All I see when I start up is the colorful graph, then I close it out and turn off the monitor.

You are still with the Screensaver version of SETI@home.....you need to evaluate if you like the screensaver (send a PM to Jigpu, he's been crunching with the screensaver, and seems happy with it) or the clc (the are some links in the homesite to use clc, SETISpy and SETIDriver).

SETISpy is an additional program for SETI@Home. All the CLC folks like it cuz they can't stand not seeing what the client is (or isn't!) doing. I liked it cuz it dosen't suck up cycles. Basicaly, it's a front end for the CLC with even more info than the GUI gives out. You can download it here:

http://pages.tca.net/roelof/setispy

It works with the GUI as well, so if you want to quickly check the info without having to spare the CPU cycles for the pretty graph, this will do the trick. Of course, if you want to occationaly look at the pretty graph and salivate, that's up to you :D !

Download it to your SETI directoy, and then run it. Go into the "client" part, and click "Configure...". Fill in the path to the client, and select the options you want.
Also, go into the "setup" part, and set up all the options you want. In the "client" portion of setup, you should set the client poll interval to 60 sec. SETI writes to its file every 60 seconds, and so checking it more than you need to is more wasted cycles.
