I have seen a Cable modem cooling mod somewher before, but I can't find the site. These lil bad boys get pretty hot, I have to purchase one, on the RoadRunner system, and I want it to last me a good while. I wanted to put maybe a fan and a heatsink in it. If anyone has seen this site I am talking about or maybe another one, please post it. Thks in advance :D

I have had to add a fan to my 5660 DSL modem/router. It was getting so hot it was actually locking up.....
No more lock ups.

That would indicate to me a POS design or excessive cust-cutting measures on the part of the manufacturer.
Is your modem in an open space? If so, complain to the maker; they did a lousy job if you have to mod your modem just to make it work 24/7.

No, it not a POS, hehe, its a Motorola SB4100. Yeah, my modem is in a wide open place, they just get hot. I have seen the insides, there are no heatsinks or anything. Well, it has a processor inside, so I can imagine the hotter it gets the more likely it is to goof up, so I figured I would slap a lil heatsink on it and throw a fan in there also for good measure. :D

Actually it is an Efficient Networks 5260 modem. And cost cutting was a problem. They ran out of actual 5260's and starting downgrading 5660 modem/routers to 5260's to fit Sprints order. Luckily someone learned how to flash it back to a 5660. So cheap manufacture is an issue on this particular modem. Although it is a common trouble on this model. And seeing that I reflashed it against Efficients wishes, contacting them and complaining is probably the wrong thing to do.
I had to put a fan in my 56K external modem it would get hot and lock up, after I put a fan in the top of it it stoped locking up

I still believe that any product should be able to run a intended without any mods, but I'd imagine that that effecient tried to be as effecient as possible with what they had. I forgot that this isn't a perfect world.

Heh. I bought the Creative DTT2500 Digital Speakers a while back and they sound kept cutting out on them. I could not figure out what it was and eventually just tried blowing a fan across the receiver because it seemed warm. Sure enough the problem stopped. I tested it and tested it and the problem was indeed heat. I returned them of course because that just wasn't normal.

Ummm.... Hello *knock, knock* What do you think is flowing through those veins of yours laddy?? I hope it isn't vodka!!:D We are all water cooled silly, we are approx. 72% water  . And that thing in your chest that goes into overdrive when you see a hot woman, is your water pump, errr I mean heart. Oh and the epidermal layer that contains all this water is your Radiator, I mean skin!! So I hate to break your dreams of becoming the "first water cooled human", but we have been doing it for centuries already, hehe :D :D

If you want to get really high-tech, we're using plasma cooling! Bet you thought that they only did that on Star Trek. Also, I'd say millenia, not just centuries.
If you really want to cool down and fight you body's attempt to kill invading bacteria (aka  fever  ), I suppose that a water block would do it. Better to aid your body by trying to get real hot (not that way:D ) so it gets over quicker.

Nope; I OCed my brain and had to use a couple of pelts to keep my temperature down. Now I've got a 4.8 GPA. I wish I'd thought of this sooner. The only problem is that everything seems so slow.

I'm just one state south of you bro, but down here we don't have to buy cable modems. Road Runner leases it to you, so you cut service, they retrieve their modem. I'm sure I could go out and buy myself the best damn cable modem tested and mod the hell out of it.
Since I've been using the Road Runner service pretty much since it first became available here in South Carolina, I've been stuck with the old black Toshiba PCX1000. It does get a bit toasty, but never once locked up on me. It's only 4mbit and RR has long since rolled out their Motorola 10mbit ones to newer customers. I talked to the guy at RR and he said pretty much the only way I would get one if something were to happen to my current one, you know, like an "accident". Whoops didn't mean to leave the cable modem on my window sill while it was raining.
My Fantasy Cable Modem Mods:
1) Make a cable modem 1000BaseT compatible
2) Water cool it.
3) Overclock it? (Not just uncapping it)
No need for fancy lights in mine, it sits on the floor, in a closet with the rest of the home networking gear we have here.

hey RedneckTech, you know any way to uncapp the RR lines?? Just curious..... I know what you mean about the newer 1000baseT connection, that would be soo swweeettt!! I would settle for 100 BaseT connection myself rightnow.

Well the heck does RR run in SC? I'm stuck with Charter Pipeline here and it sucks. At one point I was getting decent throughput compared to what most cable modems users get nationally. Then they lowered the speed. I called them up to question it but was assured that they hadn't lowered the speeds even though I had gone from 2500kbps to 350kbps.

I never thought RR lines here to be capped, early on, I was going all sorts of speeds. Anyway, I do remember there being a utility called ****UPC. I don't know the exact technical details but I think it involves changing the MAC address of your modem, I don't know.
One word about that though, RR tech support now asks for that MAC address and serial number and the social security number of the account holder before answering any technical questions.

Big brother doesn't like it when you get more bandwidth than he wants you to have.
