It's a series we've all grown to known. However, some might say the newer GTA's lack the creativity and 'fun' of the prior. So what do you think? Do you believe the series is still fun? Or has your appreciation for the series stopped at a certain point?
I loved Grand Theft Auto two and Three. Both games were very fun and had so much playability. Grand Theft Auto three sparked a new trend of action games; whereas Grand Theft Auto two was built upon the great Grand Theft Auto one.
I bought Vice City, expecting a game ten times more entertaining than Grand Theft Auto 3; however, I was greatly wrong. What I found in Vice City was questionable missions and a boring story. I didn't even bother purchasing San Andreas, I played it though, it wasn't even as good as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

I haven't really played San Andreas, but I liked Vice City a lot. I thought it was an improvement on GTAIII.
I played GTA3 part way, and finished Vice City and San Andreas. I thought each one built on top of the other, improving game play and adding new/interesting features. I also thought the San Andreas Story was great.
Maybe I'm bias though, I'm a total GTA fanboy :p

I've played every GTA so far and still think they are fun. My fav would ahve to be VC or SA tho, cause I like the music and well the cars.

was GTA2 the square futuristic/futurama style one?
that was...odd, a bit terrible
original GTA was great...took a bit to get used to, but great
never played GTA3...but got VC...thats brilliant.
and im with you guys, dont think ill try SA....nothing real special
ill stick with playing VC over and over again
I liked GTA2 best. Especially some of the missions in city 2 and 3, they were soo good:
- Drive around with remote controlled taxi's!
- Assassinate gang bosses guarded by a boatload of thugs!
- Collect random people for processing into hot dogs :D
- **** off the army and get paid for it!
- Infiltrate the prison!

It's impossible for the newer games to have the "creativity" or "originality" of GTAIII. GTAIII brought on a whole new world for us. They have to keep using the same format of starting up from scratch and essentially building up an empire for yourself. They also have to keep using the same smaller ends of the game, such as the ambulance or vigilante/firetruck missions...even small racing games.
However, I thought that they did an excellent job with the game world in San Andreas. It's ENORMOUS! They came far from the two or three island world GTAIII and Vice City had.
Even if they keep using the same formula...it will continue to be a fun game. It's not like people don't play a million different FPS games...yet they're complaining after only three installments of essentially the same GTA game.

I've played GTA III and up. At the time I played GTA III I found it revolutionary. The world was so immense and it was left up to the player to do whatever he wanted. I guess this initial feeling of revolutionary idea made the third one the one I like the most.

San Andreas was a welcome addition to the GTA series. Not only was it MUCH longer, but it also incorporated a lot of different gameplay elements that the previous 3D versions lacked. I'd say it's well worth a run-through.

I definitely think the newer GTA's are worth playing. GTA III was revolutionary because it completely changed the engine that the game was run on from previous versions. Although Vice City and San Andreas were built on pretty much the same engine, I felt that they fixed enough of the bugs and added enough new features to siginificantly improve on the previous version. And really, to me at least, the environment that is created is what really makes the game fun. The storylines are similar in the "start with nothing rise to running the city" theme, but it's the different environments that really set them apart. Everything from the clothes and the cars, to the music and characters are all brilliant, and they fit the time period and cities that the games are set in. That's what makes it fun to play through the story, and to get immersed in the situation that you character finds himself in. And really, how can you get tired of shooting hookers in the face with a sniper rifle at close range?

I've played 2, 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. The only one that I didn't really like was San Andreas because it seemed like it was exactly the same as Vice City. I know it wasn't exactly the same, but maybe I'm just getting tired of the series. I thought 2 through Vice City were great, though.
I played Vice City first, and I realy realy enjoyed it. It realy put me into a 80's funk mood :D

I have played em all (even london), and found them all to be distintively original for a series.

2 was my favorite, I liked the announcer
I really liked 3 and VC, but I couldnt stand SA, the main reason i couldnt stand SA though was it reminded me to much of all the wannabe rappers in high school.
GTA 2 was the best by far, much more people and detailed levels with more jumps and hidden vehicles.

heck yah, i loved GTA2. and the tanks were indestructable. I would grab a tank and just rampage whenever i got bored. I skipped VC, but my general complaint about the GTA series is the cars are so hard to drive. Always drifting all over the place. It gets annoying when you're on those race missions, and spin out on a corner. And I'm STILL trying to pass flight school in SA. Good games, though, definitely worth playing, but a little over-hyped these days.

GTA2 is still my favorite, I bought 1/2 when they first came out in the late 90's. Me/Buddy use to play them over Dialup with lag and all haha. If you liked the original GTA but disliked GTA2 then obviously you haven't play either of them. GTA2 is technically GTA1.5 when you think about it. My only gripe with GTA 1/2 is the TCP/IP netcode is utter garbage.
Nearly impossible to play over dialup and even fairly difficult with DSL/CABLE. LAN play really isn't a problem, but that much bandwidth & low latency to power a game that has basic direct x effects and old console graphics...Hmmm
The ultimate insult to me was when they went to Console first with GTA3 +++ and released the PC versions much later after the intial console rush ended. Not only that, but the lack of Multiplayer was a DISGRACE to the prior GTA community

I remember playing the old GTA's across the network blowing each other up :)
GTA 3 was a nice addition, I got that bad boy for PS2. Was really nice to be in a 3D world going around. I truely don't think I ever finished that game. There was 3 isleands right?
GTA:VC. Very very welcomed addition, abit short I gotta say but I loved the feel for the game. Completed this through without any cheats or books unlike GTA 3 where I was using some cheats.
GTA:SA, well gotta say loving it. Its damn huge... not to say its too big but you gotta have a little time to play this one unlike other ones if you want to complete missions and such since its extremely LARGE. I'm only to the second isle but gotta say its MUCH bigger then VC already, as in at least 2x as big if not more just with these 2 cities.
I personally can't wait til GTA 4 comes out with the next gen systems. This will be one of the few games that I get for the console. Just hope Rockstar doesn't cut the anything out of it because of senitors heading after them because its "tooo violent" in there faces, oh ya and hope its even bigger then before :)
