Hello i was just wondering what is the general FPS for quake 3 out there!
I got 45.6fps last night with my radeon 64DDR clocked to 185Mhz. i have 256mb ram and a pIII 700 @700 (Wow!!!)
I'm just wondering if that is a good score my 3D mark 2001 is 2089 is ther any way to get this higher???????

well,i have the same card as you and in quake 3 with all high quality on and 800x600 res i get between 65-70fps and my card is oc'ed to 190. I use Raid On Tweakerv5.1 to oc and tune the card and in 3dmark2k1 i get close to 4000 in WinMe ,a little bit lower in Win 2000. I think the biggest difference came from upping my fsb and processor speed

Holy S*** 4000 in 3d mark. I amde an increase from 987 to 2089 when i updated my drivers. I use two tweker programs one is the same as yours the other is Radeon tweak (i think!) (not on my home PC)
the frame rate of 45.6 (untweaked 40.2fps) is on a very high resolution some thing in around 1200x1000 or what ever it is.
its the same settings as some magazine i had. i compared my result to other PCs and it kicked ass!!!! :)
Any tips on how to get more out of my card???? I can't oc my mobo its a piece of **** tyan and wont let me over clock! thats the only complaint i have with it!!
I want to get a higher 3d score do i have to mess around with the settings to get a higher score!
Thanks
Just wondering have you modded your graphics card by any chance i'm doing mine in the next few weeks. Blue orb is going on to it!!!

I'm not trying to start a major argument but orbs do suck and suck bad. I have had 2 of them and gave up on the whole orb conept. looks cool but doesn't work any better than a good ol oem heatsink. Thermaltake, or alpha now thats cooling. :D

I've heard the orbs are not very good for cpu's, but a few people have said that the blue orb does a good job when used on a video card. Anyone have a different view on this?
ps dizzy_g not bad fps for that res! :D

I haven't tried one on a vid card. I just bought one for my cpu and found out how worthless it was and threw it away. I wish I kept it now, that's something to try. You'd think it would have to be better than a HSF but probably not...
hmmmmm, you should be getting higher FPS on your card - i have a GF2 MX and i get 60 FPS on a pIII 550e @ 733/133fsb..........i only have 192 mb pc133 ram .................my buddy that i lan w/sometimes has the same card you do on a pIII 500e and he gets 64 FPS................keep plugging...........

blorbs are great for video cards in fact that is what most people use them for......

Yeah Ok! I get it blue orb's are ****e but i'm only using it to cool my gpu and not mu cpu!
I'm gettin it for nothing so i'm really that worried. I't can't be any worse than the fan thats already on it
http://www.rage3d.com/radeon/cooling/images/01pry-s.jpg
fairly ****e i would think. If i had my way i would put a decent fan and heat sink on it!
My frames per second. On a resolution of 800x600 i easly get 55fps! (I'm not interested in low resolutions) I'm trying to get a better score on the higher resolutions!
I play quake on a res of 1280x1024. at that res i'm getting 42.5 fps without overclocking it. I justed wanted to get an idea if this was fairly good or not!
Is there any way of getting the fps on Unreal?????
Also i would never even consider putting a Blue orb on my cpu, at the moment it has a ThermalRight SK6 w/ 38 cfm Fan which i'm very happy with!!!!!!

Has anyone here ever tried overclocking there gpu or measuring the temperature of the chip? They run hot, real hot, hotter than cpu's do. your gpu has more transistors than your cpu its also about 4 times larger too. The reason you need such good cooling on cpu's is because there is alot less area to disapate it. just like the old p1's and p2's the current gpu is big and has alot of area to take alot of heat. just try to overclock you gpu and see how high you get before she locks up. orbs suck and that has been proven by testing there efficiency, not to mention there big so say bye bye to all of your pci slots. now there are alot of better, smaller, copper desings out there that will help you achieve the chips potential. but given the watts created and the space to get rid of it in then a waterblock with a peltier is much more effective but also expensive and risky. given the real world FPS increase I would say it's almost not even worth is to overclock a video card. just get a better card like a geforce 3 ti500. with all of my cooling at it's best and overclocking the gpu on a geforce 2 pro from 200 mhz to 250 mhz all i got was 10 fps increase in quake 3 at high res and all options....could i see the difference.....no there's no difference between 50 fps average and 60 fps average. could I achive the same result by tweaking settings and overclocking the cpu. yes

I was only wondering if my result was a good one. I have quake set at very high resolutions and that is the only way i play it.
Without overclocking the gpu i get a steady 42.6fps.
All i wanted to know was this a good result.
If i over clock i get perhaps a 10fps increase. But what is the point (as already stated)
All i really wanted to know was this a good result for my card!
(I'm very happy with it anyhow!)
The Blue Orb issue. As i have said i know its not the best cooler for a gpu. But i got one for free and is better than what is on the card.
I tried quake at 800x600 last night and got 68fps but who cares i would never play it at that res anyhow.

Sorry man I wasn't trying to stir things up just make a point to people overclocking cards but as an answer to your question. 42 FPS is playable in Q3 but definitely not ideal. as an example I run 1180 res and average 80 FPS in Q3. This may sound like overkill and maybe for a game as basic as Q3 it is, I mean c'mon quake 3 is a beautiful engine but the game is nothing special, basic weapons and models and no elaborate and vast outdoor maps. but take the same engine and modify to RTCW and the whole picture changes. Exotic weapons and very detailed models not to mention the maps. While playing RTCW demo at 1180 res my ave FPS drops to 50 and when I use the FLamethrower (very cool :-))
it drops to a very laggy 30 or less and that is damn near unplayable. Playable on Q3 but not RTCW. So alot of it depends on what you are playing, never think of extra FPS as overkill or unused or a waste becaus it does 2 things, 1. makes a game better durring its worst times, and 2. assures you that if a new game comes out soon you will have no problems enjoying it. Some people get 100+ FPS at 1600 res in Q3 but I bet there RTCW looks even better than mine!

Well, I said they suck, but if I were to pick between the factory hsf and a blorb, I'd go with the blorb. I didn't mean to start a debate, sorry.

Yeah all i wanted to know was it a good result (wanted to see how card preformed, i know ati is not the best GeForce is!)
What is RTCW???
I'm ver tired today, 3hours sleep last night so i could be missing this one if its very obvious!

RTCW is Return To Castle Wolfenstein which will be out within a month and looks to be the single best game released this year! It's built using the Q3A engine and you can download and play the online multiplayer demo right now and you should if you haven't yet. We played a 12 person lan of it all last weekend and it was sweet, can't get enough of this game!:D
