I wonder if we enthusiasts are overly paranoid about heat?

I bet there are 1000's of PC's out there, running temps like the above, that are perfectly fine.
Most 'ordinary' people with an AMD PC will never look at the temp.
It could be a case of 'ignorance is bliss'.

BTW my temps are:
41C idle
48C full load (ambient ~20C)
Case closed - has to be, for proper airflow past components.

All I know is, my comp used to lock up 3-4 times a day with an Asus A7V, T-Bird 900. Mobo reporting temps of 73 cpu, 40 mobo.

Changed a couple things, was able to drop cpu temp to 67-69, lock ups only came 1-2 times per day.

Bought a Millenium Glaciator and CPU is now about 49, no lockups whatsoever.

I think you might be right. My chip got abused by an ignorant newbie (me) when I decided to go out and build a computer. apparently (found out after the fact of course) I installed the heatsink backwards on the first setup (case/mobo combo that was cheap) I returned it, and got an I will kk266+R and Antec mid tower. Well, when i installed chip in new board, I didn't know about the thermal compound. Used the same stuff. It is the sticky putty type on stock AMD heatsink. I came to this site and learned. Now i have volcano 6cu and arctic silver II and am running @35C not overclocked yet. I still have much to learn. However, with the case closed it was running at 65 C with at least having the heatsink the right way round, but also having ineffective thermal paste. It still runs great. It even had a corner chipped off the core in all this madness. I can't believe I have a chip.

I don't think it is so much being paranoid as cautious. Think about it, when you pump 1.9+ volts into a proc that is only supposed to run at 1.6 or 1.75 heat becomes a very deadly enemy. Also, the cooler a semiconductor is, the more efficiently it runs. Perhaps dual pelt cooling or building your comp into a fridge is a bit much, but I think getting a good hsf and slightly modding your case is well within reason. These procs will run at 65'C, but do you really want to run it that warm. Your car will run with the coolant half empty, but I really doubt you would drive it that way, I look at my proc the same way. Why run at 60 or 70'C when I can run it at 45 or so. That's my $.02

EDIT__IGNORE THISs, POSTED ON WRONG THREAD:confused: __

Well the first thing I did was close every prog except systray and explorer, before I even came here, and I'm not running Seti or Folding, and I also am not using any cooling software. But, even with systray and explorer only it showed 100% totally unfluctuatingly (word?) for about 30 minutes. So, I tried restarting and when windows booted, even with all my startup progs running, it was back to like 3-13%. Wierd, I guess....no harm done though.

Hey another wacky thing I noticed:
When I am not moving my mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer) the monitor reads about 15%ish and when I am moving it, it reads about 3%. Seems like it should be the other way around.

I agree voltage contributes greatly to heat. Don't pump it up any more than you need to acheive stability.

I ran some figures through the 'Radiate' program.
It says my chip at 1606 and 1.75 volts has a thermal output of
82.6W.
If I were to up the voltage to 1.90V the thermal output would be 97.4W!! That's alot of extra heat to get rid of if it doesn't contribute to more stability.

As far as I can tell, my setup tests perfectly stable at 1.75V and this allows me to get away with a less noisy HSF.

BTW with the Vcool program running my current net surfing temp is 27C!

I was always trying to keep my CPU temp below 40C load, but thanks to this thread I see that most people (aircooled people, that is) have about 50C load, which means I can try to pump a little more out of my chip :0

I agree, all I was saying is that many computers are abused like that, and keep going for a long time. In my case, It ran at around 150F for about a month and a half and suffered a cracked corner during an improper installation (again, by me) However, I do now know to respect my chip if I want to keep it. I have a new Thermaltake Volcano 6cu that is keeping it nice and chilly at around 35c with the sides off, and a nice precisely applied layer of arctic silver II. It is only 15F warmer than ambient room temp. I ran quake III at hightexture for a while, and it never got above 100F. So let us say, that the lesson has been learned, but like I was saying, I am using the same chip right now, and I haven't had an error message, or a shutdown in about a week. who knows, sometimes you just get lucky.

Mine:
Computer in signature

49 C idle
58 C load
27 C case

This is all with a 1.33 @ 1.33 1.75 Vcore, Alpha Pal6035 heatsink w/ Global Win 27 CFM fan, 2 30 cfm case fans, and a finely applied layer of Arctic Silver according to directions. One day, playing with the heater in my dorm, I turned the heat up to about 85 F, processor went to 70 C pretty quickly (using Prime95). This computer almost never crashes, no matter what the temperature. I took special care to accurately or even over- measure the temps by bending the thermal probe to touch with the processor, a small glob of thermal grease to touch the two, and besides that, MSI tends to over-estimate temperatures. One of these days, I would like to get an accurate thermal probe down there, to see what exactly the temperature is.

Second computer:

Basically the same, even in the same dorm room, only this one has no case fans, a Volcano 2, an Epox 8k7a+, and is overvolted. Reported temperatures are:

40 C idle
49 C load
28 C case

This shows the inaccuracy of either MSI or Epox, I'm not exactly sure which.

btw, the signature temps were from a different room (much cooler than this)

I just modded my case with a 120mm "industrial" brand fan in the top back and another in the front bottom, and I also re-wired everything so there is almost nothing in the way of airflow, plus I have rounded cables. New Overclock! New Temps!
