If I choose to use a peltier with a liquid cooled system, do I even need a section of copper/silver between it and the CPU?

And if so, then does it have to be a certain thickness to be effective?

Well, an arguement for the "contact plate" would be that it can be polished flat and shiny to make better contact than a porcelane peltier's underside.

And if heat does transfer best into copper/silver better than porcelane, would it not also be advisable to have the peltier sandwiched between the "plate" absorbing the heat from the CPU, and a "plate" on the peltier to absorb it's heat (instead of direct water cooling the peltier) such as a water block?
:)

Good question...it's slipping down the notches a little so we'll just give it a ..BUMP! A little help?

ok here's what I know...YES you do need a coldplate...the reason is this:

Peltiers do not conduct heat laterally i.e. If you just slap it on the CPU ONLY the part of it contacting the core will do the cooling, thet rest of the power will be wasted...putting a coldplate allows the cooling power to spread out and be used better...as for the thickness...I dunno, 1/8" seems popular.

Directly watercooling the pelt IS a good idea (although a bit dangerous, learn about it before u try it) because the water will contact the WHOLE pelt (so you get the same contact area as with the coldplate, plus no extra material to transfer through)

3/16inch is the magic ratio i got from the guys at dangerden.

there goes my 2 cents

I read that if the bottom af a water block is thinner that it can lower cpu temps? This is for a non-pelt system though. My current waterblock has a 1/8" (2/16") thick base should it be thicker?

Since this is a different topic than cold plates I also started a thread on it, maybe I am cross posting, sorry!
