OK, here is the deal. I am a Linux guy for the most part, I just mess with windoze on other peoples rig so go easy on me a bit. A friend of mine got a Linksys wireless router. She has one computer, windoze XP rig, that is connected to the router by ethernet cable. They also have another very old computer running windoze 98 that has the wireless card in it. I have the computer that is connected by the cable connected and working. It is much faster than my dial-up for sure.

This is the setup bascially:

Internet >>> DSL modem >>>> router >>>> Win XP rig via cable
|
|
|>>>>Windoze 98 rig via wireless card, we hope.

As far as I can tell the old system sees the card. It shows it under the networking thing in the control panel. That seems to be working. My question is, how do I get it to connect to the router? The instructions don't mention win 98 so it is a bit confusing to say the least. Throw in that I am a Linux guy and it really gets to be a mess.

How's this work guys?

What brand wireless card is it? You'll need to go to there website and download the software for the wireless card. (Or maybe it's on a disk that came with the card?) This will let you connect to a wireless signal, and setup SSID, encryption, etc, etc.

It is a Linsys card that goes with the router. The box looks the same except that one is the router box and the other is the wireless card with the antenna sticking out the back.

Is it two different things to install, one for the card and another for it to connect? I always thought it was just one big install and that was it.

Thanks for the help, I need it, a lot.

Well, I guess I did something right last night. She called and said she booted up the computer and it was working fine, internet and all. I guess it needed a reboot for the changes I made to take effect. That is something I hate about windoze so I should have tried it for sure.

Thanks for the help though. At least it started working anyway.
