Im working on a buddies pc, when i pulled the heatsink the processor came off with it and i cant get it off, im scared to be to rough with it.
Its a pentium 2.4 , im an amd person myself Ive never really messed with pentium but it looks like it has a heat spreader on it and i cant even get a razor underneath it .
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it off. I dont know if this is adheasive or what but its pretty gummy and grey. not like as5 when i work on minewhich is usually still pasty. thanks

Most thermal compounds will create a suction effect because they conduct and fill in the the little gaps and spaces so well, there is no air in between the heatspreader/processor core and the heatsink. I probably have one of the smallest CPU dies (AMD Thoroughbred B), and I can even notice this suction effect. It is greatly exagerated with a heatspreader because of the extra surface area. Usually a slight twisting action back and forth does the trick.
From what it sounds like though, this is a thermal pad, in which case heating it and/or cooling it may help it break loose. Again, don't pry it or use excessive force trying to pull it. Bad things happen whenever you try that. All it takes is the screwdriver or razor to slip and you are pretty much screwed. Again, I would try the slight twisting motion back and forth over and over until it gets looser and looser and you can eventually get it off. I have a thermal pad like this on my Northbridge's heatsink and that I what I had to do to get it off. I would try to avoid any seriously hot temperatures, and if you put it in the freezer, make sure it doesn't get soaked in condensation when you take it out. Good Luck!
