Well from personal expirence, maxtors have really sucked for me. I've been through several, but thats my luck. The 2 maxtors I have now have been going strong for a while, but I've been through 4 other maxtors on differen't systems. A hard drive is a hard drive pretty much now days unless you get in to the more expensive stuff, like a scsi drive. If you want some great speed any sata drive will do. If you want a little bit more speed, its not really that noticeable, well for me anyway, get a western digital raptor. 5 year warranty :P

maxtors are good drives.. i think the older ones may have caused some problems for folks but they are nic quality drives.
what is your budget and do you have sata on your mobo ?
well actually im trying to get sata, because my mobo has two sata ports,
but i will never go with seagate. and my budget is 105, max

IMO, segate is right up top with WD. I despize maxtor. On my last 2 dells i've had, both have had maxtor, and both have failed. I have one maxor in my server, and thas the only one thats held up. If I were choosing brands, It would probally be segate, since they have a five year warrenty.

The only Maxtors I've had problems with are the slimline drives. I've had a 160 gig that's lasted me over four years (I think). I had a 60 that fell down a set of stairs and kept chugging with NO damage. In the shop I work at, we get a LOT more dead WD drives than Maxtor. Plus the high-end maxtors have the 16mb cache. I wouldn't hesitate going with them now ESPECIALLY because they adopted the 5 year warranty, or so I heard. I also heard WD is adopting the 5-year warranty too.

I don't know if I just have bad luck but I've sent back so many Seagates that I'm on a first name basis now with RMA. :-/
In any case, you're going to hear lots of varying experiences. If you're comfortable with Seagate, then go for them again.
I'm very happy with my Maxtor, and am thinking of going with a Samsung for storage soon. Seagate will be lower on my list, for the time being, unless the 7200.9 makes some big improvements, especially noise-wise. the 3 7200.8's I've had are not quiet. Something with the SATA and Seagate design, the IDE's are nice and quiet.

The hitachi line is nice but longevity is something that is rarely given any space in reviews.

Well if he wants longevity than he should just buy another Seagate with a 5 year warranty. :)
