The unthinkable happened this morning to me. The fan on my heatsink stopped functioning and I didn't find out until I tried to reboot and I got a warning to check my hardware monitor. I checked it said the temp was 101 degrees celsius! I quickly turned off my computer and took a look at it and I could smell smoke coming out of my computer. I checked the heatsink with my finger, stupid idea, just to make sure that my bios wasn't reading it wrong and I nearly fried my finger off.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that my processor is dead and I need to get a new one. But I was wondering if anyone out there has had experience with something like this and could tell me if my motherboard, peripherals, and memory is still ok. I have no way of testing this out because I don't have a spare cpu. I hope someone can help me or give me advice.

Thanks,
Billy

Thanks for the reply. I was worried that I would have to get a new motherboard. I'm kind of surprise that it would it still be ok. I haven't checked the cpu yet, letting it cool down I guess. But I don't think that it could have survived in those temperatures. I'll check later. Should I just physically take a look at it or should I try running my computer and see if it works? Thanks again.

Just try it once you replace the fan. The heatsink was still on so it might be ok.

I don't know, it was running for quite some time and the heatsink was smoking HOT. I've done similar things where I forgot to plug in the fan or what not but never for a long time like I did today. I'll definitely give it a try though, thanks. Even if it did survive do you think the performance of the cpu might have suffered a huge blow?

I agree, you might as well give the chip another chance. You never know. My Duron worked, and the core looked like a circle.

ouch!
sorry to hear that,
and no if its alive you should have an excelent overclocker!
that would confirm the term burning in.
but if it is dead go to replace ithere (http://www.newegg.com) . they have great prices and i'd pick up a good cooler,
maybe a sk6,
or that cak38 thingy

I've fried a couple, and the only damage done has been to the CPU, so far. I have heard anecdotal stories of the heat buggering up the socket, but nothing that I've ever actually seen. As a matter of fact, I had a heatsink clamp break and the HSF fall off for quite some time with no damage to anything else.

Since it was alive when u turned it off chances are good its still functional. Just boot the thing up to be sure But make sure the fan is spinning this time

Since it was running when you shut it off, it'll probably still work. Watch out for instabilities under load though.

Thanks for all the support and info and tbirdkiri my cooling unit is a sk6 =)

I turned on my computer last night, as you guys suggested, and much to surprise it worked!! in fact everything seems to be working ok. I haven't really noticed anything wrong, maybe I will later, but I played starcraft a bit and everything seems fine. I hope that there won't be any instabilities under extreme load. I'll try quake 3 out later and see if there are any lock ups or what not.

In any event thanks for all the support. I guess those thunderbirds can take a beating eh? Take care everyone.

You would be surpised at how much a Athlon(SLot A)/T-bird/Duron can take but still you dont want to make them suffer...
Speed..good luck

got some good news!! he's up and runing. his HSF was wacked. it's all uneven and rough where it's supposed to touch the core. i stopped by my friends, bought one of his old heat sinks and we slammed that sucker in. so far so good. however, i am worried about one temperature 'spike' he had and the damage it may have caused. the temp was already in the 70s when it spiked like WAAAYY up. im saying like 200 something. was that just a thermometer error? anyway, thanks

Glad your cpu is ok :)
Now if the heatsink fell of for some reason it would of been dead in about 5 seconds.

that's the sk6 for ya! i've heard a few stories like this. maybe it means that fans on sk6s aren't up to scratch as well? what fan was it?

Are you serious? I got the extreme package from 2cooltek which came with a 60mm YS tech fan.

using asus probe?? I get those sometimes when I leave asus probe running, can't be true though, because all of a sudden it goes back down, that doesnt hapen that fast, so its the temp monitor.

Some cpus actually overclocks higher after such high temps. But i guess it lost a bit of its lifetime, but i dont think it will be anymore unstable.
