I was warned today not to install Seti@home on the lab computers anymore by the RCC lab guy. He claimed that he was told that it hogs up bandwidth. I am not saying that he is a moron, which he is he knows nothing about computers, but rather a miss guided soul. I am appealing the warning on the grounds that I am allowed by their rules to install any program that is not harmful to the computer. Hopefully I can have the crunchers back up with in days. My total work units were sky rocketing on the weekends to. I will miss have over 120 work units a day turned in. I will keep you updated on the progress.

isn't this the same kind of thing that guy in georgia is facing? Except he's going to court, and facing jail time over it. Something to do with 'wasting bandwidth'. They claim he put it on the computers without permission, except he was the sysadmin.

Sortof. I have permission by going by the RCC rules. I am aloud to install any program that is not harmful to the computer. So basically anything but virus and worms. Even if all of the computers connected at once it would only take up 30.9% of the bandwidth to this dorm. All the other lines would still be free. That is going by a T3 line, but we have a Supernet Line which is supposed to be faster, so I bet we have even more bandwidth.

Maybe it's worth setting up a cache for the units, and give the guy some stats on bandwidth use for a typical day. All the people I've dealt with on things like this love spreadsheets and facts. With all of the software out there, I bet you can guarantee that you wouldn't use more than (insert acceptable percentage here) of the bandwitdth at one time.

just a thought.

I know how it is. I'm getting burned twice this weekend, I'm going out of town so my farm at home will be offline AND they are working on the power grid near my work so the power out there will be off and on so we will be turning off all systems there for a day or so as well. Really sucks.

I am going to do that. I also have a team member on my team that works for the RCC. He has not heard of this "bandwidth" problem, and he uses the lab he works at for guess what...Seti@home. He is currently working with me to help me get this dorms two labs back online. I only really use them during the weekend too, because people go home or are to trashed to know how to work a computer.
