I have some old "soundworks cambridge FPS1600" speakers. So what would you recommend? Not just for sound quality but for performance as well?

I would go for the x-fi if you can afford it. That way, you are set for a nice set of high-end speakers or headphones in the future. I plan on doing the same as soon as I get all my motherboard problems ironed out.

Thing is I heard that X-Fi isn't all that different from Audigy 2ZS...
