I recently purchased a l400 and lo and behold there is no optical drive.

Okay so the fix is an external, dell has this external media bay connector deal which i don't understand and i get 1 USB 1.0 port.

i was considering this drive, however there is no mention of USB 1 support. Also, I would like something without a power cord but what are you going to do.

so would this be compatible with usb 1?

The USB externals will be backwards compatible with USB 1.1 as far as reads go. Burning will suffer performance hits and possibly increased odds of burning coasters.

Several upcoming models will be able to burn everything including DVD-RAM. dual and double layer without additional power, but I'm NDA'd on which drives currently. Some engines and controller bridge boards are more efficient than others. At this stage, I'd probably either try to wait or perhaps find a CDROM until better units are on the market.
