View Full Version : What's the best additional case cooling?

I read an article at SysOpt.com, "Case Cooling Guide," by Robert Richmond. On pg. 4, it talks about "Additional Case Cooling." It mentions four extra types of fans: (1) card fans, (2) blower fans, (3) slot cooler, and (4) baycoolers.

What's the best for me? I want to use this as a cooler for my video card. I'm planning to set up one 80mm fan in the lower front of my case, one 80mm fan in the upper back of my case, a Blue Orb on my video card, and heatsinks on my video RAM. I want to have some cooling in between the two 80mm fans.

I have an ABIT Siluro GF2 MX400, so it takes up the AGP slot. I don't think there's enough room for a blower at the top of the card (I have an ABIT BE6 Slot 1 mobo with an adapter, so it sticks out and blocks the top of the video card). However, there's enough empty PCI slots for blowing on the bottom.

The slot cooler looks good, but I'm a newbie at overclocking and would like to get your recommendations. Thanks!

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan of attack for the war against heat. Those slot fans are easy to install and do help exhaust some heat away from the vid card if you mount it right next to the vid card.. However, they do not flow nearly as much as they advertise and they don't last too long either. At least they're cheap. The other viable alternative is to use a card cooler. Baycoolers are usually for harddrives so that won't do much for cooling a vid card.

My advice: it's not worth it. Slot fans do move a little air away from your vid card, but generaly they a noisy and of low quallity. They may be cheap but not worth even that...
If your case cooling in general is good enough you don't need any of these "details".
If you still want to change anything else I would take another 80mm (or even 120mm) and mount it in the top or side of your case and let it suck fresh air in.

Thanks for the replies. I got a couple replies from other forums as well, and it looks like everyone is saying "no" to the slot cooler. I'll take a look around and see what's good for my PC. Additional 80mm or 120mm fans along the side of my case looks like a good choice right now.
