Arrgh...Microsoft Word Problem

Well I was just finishing typing a very short current events on my Mom's computer (only computer with printer) for my European History class As I was typing my final 2 sentences, and error message appeared. It said something similar to:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error
Abnormal Program Termination

The thing is, it seemed alright because MS Office recovered my document. However, when I opened the recovered document, the same error message appeared. I retried 3 times, and the same message popped up over and over again. This is ****ing me off because the same thing happened to my mom last night while she was doing something for work. What gives? I'm just about ready to dust off the typewriter, or less dramatically, get OpenOffice. Any help with MS Office would be appreciated, however.
