Slow wireless speeds both LAN and internet?:(

Hi,
Ive just setup a aireless network in ym new flat for me and my flatmates. However despite us having an 8MB/s connection we have a really slow network, i mean like 35kb/s fastest download speeds.The router is a brandnew 3com ADSL 11g Firewall router. My wireless card is also brand new and is a Belkin card. The software on the router itself says that the connection is 8006Kb/s so its not our ISP. The transfer speed between computers is also horribly slow(6 mins to copy a family guy episode?). Does any one have any ideas? Im assuming that i have set some sttings incorrectly some where. Also our computers are no further than 10m from the router itself.Any help would be appreciaed as this problem is driving me nuts.

have you changed channels?

I've found moving large data files over wireless is slow as well. I haven't pinpointed it out just yet. All the usual signs are good (strong signal, etc) but I move 700MB and it's about 100MB/min or so.

Change channels to what?It is set at 11 as default.Also what is SSID and what effect does this have? I have turned off the firewall using MAC varification and Im now using WEP 64Bit encryption instead . Are there any other settings that may be causing the slow speeds?
