View Full Version : Dual Core 6600GT... SLi board?
Just a quick question, do you need a SLi motherboard to use the dual cored 6600GTs?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont think anybody made a duelcore 6600GT. Check your box to see if its an SLi capable card. If it has a gold colored 1cm section on the top of the board then its SLi, now check your Mobo box to see if it supports Sli.
A quick newegg search relveals that the mobo board in your sig is not SLi ready though :( .

I'm sure I've seen them for sale :o And yeah, my board isn't SLi...

i think ur talking and 2 gpu's on one board. U need a sli board for that but then u cant use the other pci-e slot.so practically it like having 2 6600gt's but takes up less space.
yeah, but I thought that only Gigabyte dabbled with putting 2 GPUs on one card, and they never camed/have come to market. So really, there are no dualcore GPU's on the market.

youre right, they did. so as far as i know, if you dont have a SLi board not only will one of the cores not run, the other might be limited to 8X since both are supposed to run 8X*2, so it might not be 'backwards compatible' to 16X*1.. though I could be wrong.

There are dual 6600GT boards and yes, you do require an sli chipset to use it. the sli bridges are done on chip and have no external pinout to add more cards. so if you get a dual core sli board, thats what you get. no adding another one later.
it still uses a x16 slot and runs just like two x16 cards in x8 sli. just taking one slot.
A downside is that both cores have to share the memory bus which limits memory bandwidth considerably.
Its a nice option for those who have SFF, low noise or low budget systems as i belive they are a little cheaper than two normal cards.

but if you dont have a sli board, will the GV-3D1 just drop off one of the cores and drop use of lanes, or will it just not function or what?.. if anyone knows.. theoretically I can see that it would just drop a core and 8lanes, just like running an ATA133 HHD off an ATA33 Cable.. it just slows down
