View Full Version : Files/Buffers In Windows Me!
Hello,
I need to change my:
Files=45
Buffers=45
In the config.sys file.
I was able to do this in win98 but ever since I
upgraded to winME I could never do it! :mad:
Any Hypothesises? :cool:

Why do you need to change these? The files & buffers command is from DOS days when these were used to speed up file access from disk. Under Windows9x/2000 etc they are not required.
True, But I have many programs that run
under dos that I need to use, and I can
nolonger use them in WinME! :mad:
Because I am unable to change the Files/Buffers.
Is there any way to change it in windows ME?
you could try palcing the statement in c:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI file under [386Enh]
That did not help :(
It says to place it in the config.sys file
I do that in the one in my root directory,
then I reatart my PC and it deletes what
I put in there.
I change the config.sys in the Windows directory
but it doesent seem to have an effect.
well if you go here follow the directions and apply the patch i know you will then be able to mod your config without overwrite on boot, so
let me know

I have downloaded the patch but I do not completely
understand how to use it.
Can you tell me the basics?
ok it is a 3 step process
Stage 1:
Before applying the patch, complete the following tasks:
1. Create a temp directory and copy into it:
"C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM"
"C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD\IO.SYS"
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGENV32.EXE"
OK make a folder on your desktop, call it temp. find,copy and then past the above mentioned files ito it, also make another folder on your desktop-call it patch old and past a copy of those files into it for safekeeping(just incase)
2. Make sure that the three files are writable, by running from the temp directory:
"ATTRIB -R -H -S *.*"
Ok, click on each and change the atributes, or run from the command line the above command after you cd into that folder
Stage 2:
When you complete the tasks above, execute from the temp directory you created the included patch:
"WINMEDOS.COM"
OK stick that patch (U GOT THE RIGHT ONE?) in to that temp folder, click on it and watch it go
Stage 3:
Once the patch completes successfully, perform the following tasks in order to complete the installation:
1. Copy the patched files to their destination, overwriting the original ones:
"IO.SYS" to "C:\"
"COMMAND.COM" to both "C:\WINDOWS\" and "C:\"
"REGENV32.EXE" to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM"
OK, copy the (now patched)files from your desktop/temp folder one by one into the folder that contains each of the above listed, in effect overwriting/changing them
NEXT just edit as stated
2. Edit "C:\CONFIG.SYS" and "C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT" changing them as described below:
Add to "CONFIG.SYS" the line: "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS".
Add to the bottom of "AUTOEXEC.BAT" the line: "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM".
That's it! Once these tasks are completed, DOS will be ready for use on the first reboot.
OK give yourself a couple boots, try your dos programs, see if they now run, if you need u should now be able to edit in your files/buffers info without it being rewrote
oh yea, are u running restore?
THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
I did what you said and added
Files=45
Buffers=45
to the config.sys
just like I did in win98,
Then I rebooted.......................................... .......
AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Again!!!!!! :) :) :)
