Saw the commericial for this thing way early in the morning. DirectTV, former USSB, is well known for their satelite TV service, hell even I own one. They even had DirectPC, your own slow satelite connection to the Internet. Now they have DSL? As I understood it, it usually required a telephone company to do DSL or a company big enough to setup central offices in certain areas to have DSL service. It seems like what DirectTV is offering, is nationwide DSL, no area uncovered.
The commericial showed how simple it was, just purchase their DirectTV DSL Gateway and hook it up to your existing phone line and into your PC and your online. Price was stated at $19.99 for the first 3 months, and $49.99, $10 more a month than my 4mbit cable, but still the thought of nationwide DSL is awesome.
I haven't researched this thing at all, so any input would be greatly appreciated, just felt like clueing all you guys into this.

well i had one of those salesmen call my house once and he was a real ass to me.
but for the actual dsl it self.
just find out how close you live to the provider.
the avertised speeds are ok but you could do better.

DSL guys,
It work for Qwest.net DSL, and do Tech Support for the ISP and network..and it really depends on the kind of DSL a, i, s and so on. I really don't think the rnetwork could bethat simple though: take the Qwest example:
home>DSLAM>ls1010>CO>ATM cloud>ISP>internet..
very simplified of course and the CO can house the first two devices but lucent and cisco DSLAMs and LS1010s cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I'm not doubting what you heard..but it might take awhile to get the network set up.

Some dsl companies run their own lines and others work with/are local telco's I do tier 1 tech support for an account that has one of each. The one that has it's own lines is really crappy but it is the only game in town for most of its customers. The other company is really good it even guaranties a minimum UL/DL speed.

well i am considering DirectTV DSL over what I'm currently on, Time Warner's Road Runner here in central FL
just tested from dslreports speed test:
Test Running.........
** Speed 104(down)/129(up) kbps **
(At least 2 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging Result
Finish.
now, if im not mistaken, that sucks. big time. especially for cable. I haven't played a decent q3 or cs game in months, it has slowly decreased in speed ever since i ordered it about a month ago.
As aposed to bellsouth (which is also an option), there is no activation fee. Bellsouth charges $50 i believe for an activation fee, but you can choose what modem you want (and you must pay for it :( ) All together to subscribe to bellsouth will cost me close to $200. However, I'm unsure if theres a hidden payment required with Direct TV dsl......
Does anyone know what type of modem they ship to you? (ethernet, USB)
and is there any secret payment required to order that they didnt mention?
yah roadrunner has some major suckage going on here in the south.:D
i have bellsouth adsl and im very satified with my speeds.:)
but as for the actual customer service and fees. they suck big time.

haha
I have road runner and I had thim come to my house sense cable was disconnecting all the time
the tect guy fixed it somewhat and told me to call thim EVER time rr disconnects
So I will be calling thim alot and sooner or later they will have to fix the problem
here customer service is very good and that came out the day after I called=]
did you ever try calling thim?
dsl normaly costs alot to install but after the first week its normaly a fee of $50
and you cannot quiet your service for a year or you have to pay for the modem
why would you want to quiet your dsl service.:D

of course ive called, at least twice.
and of course they have no solution, instead they state they will check my line and such, and send a status email if they find a problem.
I'm still waiting for their email....

Have you done the tweaks for broadband connections? here are a few links that might help http://www.speedguide.net/ and http://www.dslreports.com/ . I have road runner and live in the same area as you, probably on a diferent part of there net, and I get 2.9 to 3 Mbits down and 384Kbits upload consistently. Road Runner is dealing still with a lot of code red like activity here still and apearently mamy people are not doing anything about it and ofcourse this eats up a lot of bandwidth away from everyone else. Is your data light blinking even when you are not on the web? If you have a firewall are you geting a lot of hits on it?

i happen to have dslreports as my homepage :)
ive tried to tweak it.. no use.
Winter Springs is just northeast of orlando, so i suspect i live pretty close to you.
i use a linksys 4-port router to connect three computers, and only two are used for gaming. I fed the modem cable directly into my computer, no change. i still recieved horrible ping times.
And surely they'd rid their systems of the latest viruses by now, that would be sad if they hadnt yet.
it seems my only option is Bellsouth or DirectTV... if i ever want to play a decent multiplayer game in my area again.
well i got bellsouth, so if you got any questions shot.:)
DirecTV DSL used to be Telocity. I had them, once you got up you were okay, but they had typical ISP problems, too many subscribers, not enough support, and when I cancelled my service they completely forgot to ask for the modem back...:)

Unfortunatly it isn't up to them. The activity originates on other peoples computers it comes accross there networks to your house.
