My second system is giving me problems. It recently gave the error of "The registry has run out of space, Windows will ignore something" or along those lines. Erm okay.

So I go to install drivers for this PS2 -> USB convertor (playstation 2 mind you) and it fails horribly. Yay. I poke around the c:\windows\system32\config folder, and I find the following:

The registry (if the registry is system and system.sav) is 260mb combined. If you look at the pic, my main system's folder is on the left (the one that's themed) That only adds up to 155mb, and my main has alot more software installed and such. (The error from the installer is at the bottom.)

Any idea what is wrong, and how I can fix it?

Edit: Also why are the system and system.sav the exact same size on one system, and completely different on my main?

that is huge. My system file is only about 5MB, and I haven't seen many that are past 10MB.

what you could try to do, is boot from recovery console, and replace the system file with the one from \windows\repair. You'll need to redo all your drivers though (or some of them at least) plus maybe reactivate Windows. I don't know if you want to go through all of that.

Sometimes Windows freaks and fouls the registry itself. One night when I had made no changes o my system i shut it down thinking I was done for the night. I went back later and rebooted and everthing was messed up. I had a couple of hundred registry errors found by Norton, which isn't even a good program for finding them. (Also, the computer had not as of yet been overclocked)
Short of running a Windows repair install, you might try a good registry cleaner and defraging program. I use Tune Up Utilities, but there are p;plenty of others. Good luck with it.

The registry files are insanely big. But, the error message on the bottom can also be caused by the page file being too small. If that was on my PC, I usually just reformat the HDD and reinstall Windows. If you can't reformat the HDD and reinstall Windows, (or don't want to) look for a utility that can get rid of extra registry entries.

Gee wiz, even on a PC infested with spyware, I have yet to see that!!

Page file is 768mb, and the commit charge in task manager is only 220mb/1248mb.

Just tried to install Tune Up, and of course, no go. It gets a fatal error, which it doesn't specify, and rolls back the install. I need a program I can run that doesn't install itself. (I do have Regscrub XP on there, if that's any good.)

Or maybe (ack) manually deleting some crap in regedit?

WinASO Registry optimizer

one of the best ive tested with ..

alot of these type of programs tend to make programs not start up ..
this one found over 180 registry flaws... and i had only one problem after i cleaned them .. my hp all in one printer software .. i had to re-install the fax part of the software..

i suggest backing up registry before completing a fix.

here is a link to registry defrag

I just did a system restore, and it's fine now, down to 6mb. I have Active Registry Monitor going, so if it does decide to spike back up to 131mb again, I can see what entries are changed, or if it's just random crap.
