i just got this dremel 400 xpr and it literally smoked and smelled it was burning!

has anyone experienced this? if so, what did you do to have replaced? went to DREMEL site and their was no section about RMA's. all i saw was for me to send it back to a repair center which i do not want. wonder how their warranty works..

If the unit is new and went out that quickly it's probably defective. Take it back to where
you bought it I say.

take it back to where you purchased it and due to dremel's lifetime warranty, they're obligated to replace it (atleast when i bought mine from sears)

i had one of the older models, it died after about a year, i got a replacement from sears, within a week the speed switch stopped working (it was either OFF, or FULL-SPEED), so i took that one back, and rather than try dealing with more crap that stopped working, the guy in the tools section hooked me up with a brand new top of the line XPR for no extra cost... now thats service :attn:

my uncles did that every so often. But it happened if the dremel was on for an extended time (5-8 minutes straight). If I let it cool off for a bit, it went back to working.

thats cool.. did you buy an extended warranty? talked to customer service at dremel and they told me to send it to their service center. wonder if HOME DEPOT will do the same as what sears did. i bought a kit. can i just bring the rotary tool or all of the stuff?

OIL? i have to oil it? did not see anything about oiling it in the manual

are you sure? I thought you did.

I think that was the flex shaft.

My Dremel also gets hot from extended use but I've never had any smokes yet. I'd take that one back for an exchange.

mod your demel with a fan and heatsink...

yea dont forget, you have coils of copper winding whipping around at a couple thousand RPM, carrying an electrical current

i say one was crap wired, and thats why it smoked. take it back. i have a dremel brand one, NO issues at all

neighbor had one that smoke...its a hazzard, the winding melted, and would fly out of the air vent, and electrocute the user

Have a Dremel and a B &D RTX. The dremel hasn't faired so well, went back to sears for 2 replacements in the past year and a half, had the RTX for 2 years, still spiffy.

Dremels can overheat very quickly if you are not careful. The switches on the Dremels that control speed is basically a variable resistor, those often burn out. I know this because I have burned out three. Also if you are not careful to keep the air intakes on the Dremel unobstructed by your hands, it can also overheat that way.

I think the brushes on the motor wear down after a while too.

I thought these things were pretty much self destructable. I've had mine for 5 years I try to use my bigger tools if I can, Although i've done some big jobs with it.
