View Full Version : Cheap PCI-E card?

As some of you may have read in other threads, I'm building a new system. I've been using ATI AIW AGP cards for years, but am looking at the following:

DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D or Epox 9NPA+ Ultra motherboard
1GB (2x512) Crucial Ballistic PC4000 (tracer) or 2GB (2x1GB) Ballistic PC4000
AMD Venice 3000+
Hauppauge PVR-150 Video Captuer/TV Tuner card

I'm looking for a reasonably priced (by reasonable less than $80?) PCI-E card that'll just work decent for video. I don't game so frame rates or whatever are of zero importance. I'd like 128MB or more of DDR memory. The main function of my system is Video Recording and Encoding.

I'm thinking maybe this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127178

This is really the last piece of hardware I need to decide on before purchasing the components. I've been very happy with my ATI AIW 9000 Pro AGP card, but I just can't justify getting a new AGP motherboard when it'll be outdated overnight. My issue is that with not gaming, I have no idea which PCI-E video card to buy.

I would personally go with smoething more like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102563) The card you listed only has 16MB VRAM and eats into system memory for additional RAM. It probably won't hurt the system too much, but I wouldnt want it. The card I listed also has a 128MB Memory Interface, vs the 32MB interface on that card. I dont think you will be disappointed with it if you choose to get it.

Thanks for the suggestion. This one seems ok as well, but has the 64-bit memory. Opinion?

I had considered it, but I typically get higher end boards. I had considered waiting for other ULI chipset boards, but I'm hurtin and just can't wait 6 weeks.

I haven't ruled that board out, but the Epox and DFI are in the lead. I'll probably end up with the Epox. I used to be seriously in to overclocking back years ago when I was in college, but getting older, it's a little less important and I just want ease of use and stability these days.

That's two for the same type card, so I'll go with the Sapphire model for $66. Thanks.
