View Full Version : Any thoughts on THIS SETI PROBLEM???

One of my machines has a strange problem with SETI Spy/Driver

When I first start SPY..the icons for SPY and the BLUE Radio Telescope appear in the task bar....

If the system runs for any amount of time...they just dissapear..

If I CTL/ALT/DELETE to bring up the processes menu..it says that they are still running.....

But still no icons....

I've re checked my setup..and everything looks like it's set where it is supposed to be...

This is the ONLY machine in my farm that does this, and it's driving me NUTS!!!

Any ideas how to fix this????

Did you reinstall spy/driver/clc?

I get the same problem but only if I get an error within explorer.

Same thing here..... If explorer has an error, it'll kill ALL my tray icons. Do you loose only spy and driver's icons, or all of the icons in the tray?

it wastes your computer resources.............that's all. Don't get me wrong....................this is good stuff....i support it 100%........but i hate to see my process and memory wasted.................:)

What else are you using it for? I don't really see how you can support it if you feel that participating is wating your resources..the ones that you aren't even using at that.

I'm fascinated at this one....I like sciences.....don't get me wrong............there are many ways of supporting this project................using our computer for this project is one of many ways...................

my computer FREEZE...........Bill Gates Tells me that My computer is running out of resources............I have no way but uninstal it............

Now then Softwebdev.

The whole point of these distributed computing projects is that they use your system resources, normally when you aren't.

SETI can be set to run at different priorities.

#1 : Low - Only runs when screensaver is running (You're not using it then!)

#2 : Normal - Always runs, but gives priority to all other programs, so they don't run slow (Mine is set to this)

#3 : High - Has priority over system resources. Will slow everything else down

If you are unwilling to run it, the choice is yours, and yours alone.

i let this thing run more than 12 hours in 1 DAY....................and still let it run as long as my computer can handle it............i want to push my computer to LIMIT..........that's run 24/7 without restarting or SHUTting down................Dangerous Mission.

I have computers that I haven't rebooted in a month or so running SETI 24/7. Doens't really seem to affect them all that much...

to answer your question, it depends..................if you have Fastest process and a lot of Rams (assume everyone has NOWDAYS), NO PROBLEM..................:)

Cooling..........................has to be in place............

Nah.... I'm still running a 466Cele with a mere 64MB of RAM, and it runs for about a week or two without a reboot (cuz some other program freezes). Of course, I'm also running it on a P-100 with 48MB, and haven't needed a reboot yet!

I think that something is screwey with your system. I've never ran out of resources yet.....

Whoa, Bill Gates is popping up on you screen? Please OH Please take a screenshot! ;) j/k

How can the computer be running fine, If SETI causes it to run out of resources? We all have been running SETI for a while, on every platform, every different type of mobo, processor, RAM, video, cooling available, without a consistent problem. I'm sorry, but the problem you are having, is not a problem with Seti, it's a problem with your setup and Seti. If you would like some help incorrecting the problem, please let me know.

it's very nice of you......thank you very much.............even though i say that, i still let SETI run in my computer for more than 20 hours a day ...........

i want to contribute something to society and sciences too........:)
