Well im dual booting with 2k , and a blank partition. I want a linux OS also, so what is a good one to start with, Mandrake 8? I am leaning towards GUI interface over the CLI interface till i get more used to running Linux. What is a good OS and where can i get it?

Point and Choose!

Most versions of linux are GUI orientated now so there should be no probs. mandrake 8.x is excellent for beginners (my computing teacher uses it and he really likes it ;-] ) although my personal fav is SuSE. I think Mandrake 8.1 and SuSE 7.2 are the latest releases as I speak (or should that be type!). If you dont like CLI then dont go for slackware or debian (yet ;-])

Mandrake 8, definitely.
I have used Slackware, Red Hat, SuSE and Mandrake and Mandrake is my favourite. Slackware is hard to use and Red Hat unduly expensive. Mandrake is more geared towards newbies, but as an experienced Linux user I still prefer it to SuSE (I felt that SuSE made it hard to modify things by hand).

Well, as you could probably tell, I like Slackware...but it is a bit more CLI centered

My second fav (and the distro I ALMOST got) was Suse...
I've never really liked red hat..its never wanted to work with me

I would tend to disagree that SuSE is harder to modify by hand, SuSEConfig will not modify hand-edited config-files.

I have been able to replace the entire X windows system on SuSE 7 (getting SuSE 7.3 soon)

I use Mandrake, but from what I've heard, it isn't as stable and polished as Suse is. I tried Slackware once, install took too long, but it's a good option if you want a fast, stable os once you get familiar with Linux.

Well, SuSE would certainly be my second choice. It IS very well done. Mandrake is less stable than what I know Linux can do, but it's still pretty good.
I guess that what did it for me was that I feel more confortable tweaking the system by hand better with Mandrake. For a new user this might not be as important.

Either way, don't fret over deciding between Mandrake and SuSE. They are both good.
