So i got my V-1 last week, slapped it on the 6800GT after a ramsink mod and now trying to OC. Thing is, i can't it to OC at all without artifacts. I'm getting artifacts at only 360/1000 which SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING! Idles at about 45 load barely goes over 60. Was using XG's 78.03 and then switched to some other .03's but same thing.

EDIT::installed coolbits, switched to the 81.84's to see if anything would work but no luck. detect optimal tells me to run 407/1100 so i tried that but it BSOD'ed when i ran 3DMark.

PLEASE HELP!?

maybe try some older drivers. try the 71.XX. i use those. the newer drivers dont work for me properly. everytime i play HL2 with the new drivers the game like stalls when frames start dropping.

i dunno just my $0.02

You may also want to try 77.77's. I have had great luck with them. Like the above poster, I have had nothing but grief with 8x.xx drivers on my 6800GT.

Also, you said you did a cooling mod. Did you use AS5? If so, how much? You have to be careful not to use too much. it takes a very small amount or it will get around and up underneath the RAM. As long as it's on top it won't hurt it, but if it got up under it where the ball grid array is, that will cause all hell to break loose.

no i used very a very little amount. what i tried to do was put a small dab and then smear it on the HS (pressing very hard) first so when i put the leftover on the ramchips it was a very thin layer(if that makes sense)

Mate,

Did you crack the core?

Mate,

i really hope you didnt crack the core. you NEVER put pressure on the core, you just set the heat sink on and turn it a quarter of the way left, then turn the heat sink right so it smears. u never put pressure on the core. you may have cracked it.... check to see if u cracked it. take the heat sink back off, and see if there is a hairline crack or chipped. take allt he As5 off and look at it. if it looks okay and there is no cracks, it still may be cracked inside but might not show anything on the outside. but if u see nothing reapply AS5 and turn the heat sink left to right a couple times then set it in place with the screws or springs watever your card uses. DO NOT over tighten the screws, you will crush the core or cause artifacts that you are having now. as soon as you feel the screws getting tight STOP. if it still has the problem, my money is on cracked core....

it sucks learning the hardway.. :bang head

Oh man. :( Shoot. I hope he didn't crack it too. Pressure is bad. People told me to treat the core like glass. It isn't quite *that* fragile, but a little too much and it will crack, chip, or shatter. It seems like the issue cropped up after the change, and that's usually a sign it's related to the change. Well poo poo. I hate making posts like this. It's so depressing.

I sure hope the GPU is OK and everything works great after a reseating and checkout. I really do. That 6800GT is a really nice card. I have a Chaintech 6800GT so I know man. I can sympathize with your troubles, and hope everything works out for the best.

Coulda messed up the video card RAM when you pasted RAMsinks on them. I had a Geforce 3 that fried on me after I Arctic epoxied the original ramsinks onto the chips. I would get crazy artifacts in 2D and 3D, the card was fried. I'd suggest RMAing the card.

if he cracked the core, he cant RMA it. these manufacturers arent stupid. and if he pasted ram sinks on they wont like that either....take the hit brother.

With my 6800gt, there was a shim thing around the core I am glad that was there too as I really wasnt that carefull when installing my waterblock (I zip-tied it on) I believe he should be ok if I was ok.

guys... thats for your concern but i only put pressure on the RAMSINK. i was very delicate with the ramchips and the core. i dont think anythign is fried cuz it works fine with stock setrtings just i get a low OC on it.

is my PSU not enough? maybe thats it?
CPU: 1.5x113%
LDT:1.3v
Chipset:1.6v
RAM:3.4v
NEC DVD Burner
Gigabyte Combo drive
Aerogate 3 Fan controller:
4x80mm(ram/side panel)
3x120mm(panaflow medium intake/side and exhaust are low speed that came with the case)
1x90mm(silentcat CPU)

wat do u mean "i only put pressure on the ramsink"? you were obivously putting pressure on the ramsink while it was on the card did u not?

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for tightening the heatsink down onto the gpu? When I got my statis thermal cooler I followed the instructions then hand tightened the nuts as far as I could with hand tightening. Then I tightened them another 1/4 with pliers. So how much is too much?
