I'm such a lucky idiot!

To make a long story short I ended up watching over a hour of fightclub on DVD with my comp withought my 80mm delta on, No casefans either!

Halfway through the movie I realised it was waaaay to quiet and check my heatsink with my finger, "AHHHH the burn!".... sure enough I hadn't reinstalled MBM so it never beeped at me either!
I quickly reset the computer and went into the BIOS to look at the temp.

84 C!

Who says AMD chips are heat sensitive! Given that I'm using the Kt7a's thermistor, I could easily imagine the chip temp was actually well over 90C.

I also attribute my luck to my big copper clod of a Heatsink, it saved that chip!

Hard to say what load the cpu is working at, but I was using software DVD decoding so it sure as hell wasn't idling!

Anyways, I'm glad I spent 75 bucks on this heatsink, I doubt a sk6 would have faired as well.

the sk6 isnt a pasive heatsink so it needs a fan and doesnt just benefit from one

The sk6 does fair well if that should happen, I once left my fan off the hs when i was building a duct,i had left and came back home to find my girlfriend using the pc to check her email.I freaked but then noticed that my temp reading on the digi doc was only in the 60's.I did have 2 120mm fans going in the case but i still thought that was amazing that it held up

I have seen some cases
were cpu's will get up too
95C stable.
I would not try it though.

All of these temps are making me nervous! Boy, those are high!

Your chips might run stably at that temp (or seem to, at least) but they won't last long (I'm sure you all know that already, just kinda pointing out the obvious. :))

You probably wouldn't be able to boot with them up there, either.

my roommate doesnt think chips need cooling if they arent overclocked, so he has NO case fans or anything. he has his whole computer in a mini-tower case, all closed up, with just an orb on it. this thing runs at like 80c. i told him that was BAD. he didnt care :-( i wanna check and see what chip he has, it must be pretty decent, because its 80c at idle. and it never crashes. hes been running it for about 4-5 months like that too without problems.

When I went from my Volcano II to my Volcano 6cu+ I left the fan unplugged and one of the two extra case fans unplugged. The temp rose 3c over a 5 minute period, I couldn't figure out why. Then I looked in the duct and saw the fan not moving. Man did I freak! Still, no damage so it was a short term freak.

My friend Eil Atan was running his 1.4 AYHJA Y at like 58 C...not too bad, butb still not nice!! So I came to visit him, this weekend, and brought my tube of arctic silver with...

He had been running with his case side off, since he only has a bad 80mm intake with no actual hole up front, an 80mm exhaust, and a Glaciator. Ripped all the cords out the back, and removed the Glaciator to see the most discusting amount of dust accumulation I have ever witnessed! Each of the fan blades had a big lump of lint-dust on their blades, and the tops of the fins were covered so badly it might as well have been a passive insulated heatsink! We cleared that off, applied arctic silver(and cleaned the rest of his nasty case of dust), booted up, and his temps were at about 36 C. They slowly climbed to about 42 C, but I think 16 degrees drop isn't too bad!!!
