View Full Version : Is it good to buy used and overclocked Celeron CPUs?

There's a person who's selling a used Celeron 633 (cC0 stepping) flip chip at a local store. He told me that it had been overclocked before to the 950MHz range. Is it good to buy used and overclocked CPUs? Or should I stay safe and go for a new one? Thanks!

how much does he want for it?

that isnt a bad overclock but i agree with Bmx it depends on the price if he is giving it to you for less than 30 dollars go for it.....it probly still has at least 5 years of life left......any more than that and i would get a celly 800 new and oc the heck outta it

He wanted $25 for it, but he also said the price is negotiable. I would like to get a Celeron 800, but my ABIT BE6 mobo is able to support only up to a Celeron 700 and P3 850. I read that I could get it up to a Celeron 1GHz and P3 1GHz, but it's not guaranteed that it'll work.
Am I able to go out and buy a Celeron 800 and use it for my mobo? Or is it safer to stay within the official maximum?

you should be able to get a bios update. It will most definately support a celey 800, but you don't have 133fsb so you don't have much overclocking room. I have my celey 667@1ghz on the BE-6. I love the mobo, just wish it had 133 fsb.

Yeah you should be able to put a 1000e or 1000MHz celery in it with a slocket.
I have Abit BE6 and celeron600@900. I have the latest bios update and it writes that it supports PIII 850 so I think there is no reason that the celeron 800-850 or even 1100 will make a problem.
I'm was thinking of buying a celeron 850 and make it to 1190 (140 fsb) I now that the board can make it b'cause I've had my PII400@560 (140 fsb) but now I'm waiting for the Tualatin-sloket.
I think 25$ is just fine for a celeron 950 if it will do it at low voltage like mine. (mine does 900@1.65) And I think that's important for the cpu's life time.
It's a hard decision . I'd like to have celeron 850@1190 but I know a friend who had a problem running cel 850 on his Abit BE-2

if you can get it for that price go for it.....or try to bargain more say 20 or so.......because remember that youre really getting a 900mhz celly isnstead of a 633......an 800 for 10-20dollars more however is a much more lastin investment.....

I would buy new. Any time a chip gets around $50 that is a good deal. $50 these days should get you too 1200MHz. 900MHz celeries are doing this.

633's are $32 on pricewatch:rolleyes: I would give him no more than $15 but that is me.
Negoiate till you get a price some where from 20-25 dollars...
ITs a good price.!!!
Your knowing it actually oc's a minimum of 40-50% so :)))))

You never know, he might have actually gotten a higher o/c and just said a step down because its guaranteed.
Well at least ya know something :P better than they giving you an empty hand hehehehe

The life of the processor is a moot point. You'll only have it a year or so and then upgrade if that long. The price from pricewatch does not include shipping and if you compare shipping cost you'll find that many of the companies advertising on pricewatch have unusually high shipping costs which would put the chip around $45.00. Buy the chip but only if they guarantee it long enough for you to verify their performance claims. If it boots ok then barring something you might do wrong it should be ok. Let me get near it and you won't have to worry about it:D

Hey offer him 15 and if he says no, say, ok and start to leave. I'll bet ya he calls ya back
you guys have to count shipping when buying new. they rape you on shipping costs.
633's may be $32 but did you see the shipping costs. ahh more like $42.50+ after shipping.
just make sure if you buy used that they garauntee no doas and your getting the same or lower price than the bottom one at pricewatch.com
often times the lowest prices at pricewatch.com are from really crooked sellers. check reseller ratings. i passed by three stores when ordering my hardware modem and ended up paying about $5-6 more than the low price.
if your buying from highly active members or senior members here or at any of the really big hardware forums like hard oc then they better be selling decent products or they will be loosing a lot of friends.
LOL I've never thought of the shipping I thought you were buying it from a friend..
Anyways since it's shipping I'd just buy a new chip...
Unless your can negoiate to some what a 15-20 dollar price.

if your only talking 20 -25 dollars then i say hell yeah go for it the worst you have to lose is 25 dollars
But for 25 dollars and like 10 dollars shipping for a total for 30 dollars I would just add 20 dollars in and get myself a brand new chip some what 1gig Celly

I've updated my mobo to the latest TH BIOS. I'll be getting that Celeron 633 soon, so hopefully I could get close to 1GHz. Since you have a BE6 too, I'll be coming at you if I have any problems with overclocking. ;)

Yeah, I'm planning to wait awhile and negotiate for a better price. I doubt anyone is really looking for 633s these days, so my postition is actually pretty good. :)

Actually, he didn't guarantee it. He said he doesn't guarantee that I'll get the same result, although he's been running the 633 @ 950 for almost a year. I'm satisfied with 950, although I read that some people were able to crank it up to 1GHz with proper cooling. 1GHz will sound a lot better. ;)

Hmm, I don't know about this. If he doesn't call me back, should I turn around and say "OK, you win"? Heh, that'll be too embarassing. :D

I'm buying from a local store, not online. I think people were just comparing online prices with local prices to determine whether it's a good deal or not.

Thanks for all the replies! I've ordered some fans, heatsinks, thermal compound, etc. over the Internet, and once those stuff arrive, I'll go for the Celeron 633. Hopefully I'll get at least 950.
