I have just got hold on some water cooling and wanted to try it on my old amd k6-2 400 mhz I got to 550 mhz 35° no probs then I wanted to raise the multiplier and I did so it then turned on the monitor and froze there (has a monitor that detects if there is a signal if there isn't it turns off) then raised the vcore a bit I could then see the AGP post and then froze raised it too 3.4 vcore and it ran in bios the temps was 37° but wanted to make it fully stable so I raised to 3.5 and then nothing happened everything was just dead after turning on again (set it with jumpers on a Asus p5a) can I have burned the cpu? (moved it back still no response lowered everything to 130 mhz and vcore 2.5 volts still no luck)
please help as I don't want to loose my server

Sorry to tell you that but it could be that you burnt that chip, cause a voltage raise more than 15% more than the default is putting the CPU at risk but you went much more than 15% so, I think that it could be burnt... You should try it with default settings on another motherboard or another CPU in your motherboard to check if its defently the CPU or something else.
That things a gonner,
Raising the volts on a K6 even a small amount
will kill it!

Try unplugging the puter for about 10 seconds then plug it in and reboot. Sometimes this will work when the bios won't let you post.

how can it change so much i mean from 3.4 37° celsius to 3.5 just burned nothing just gone it wasn't even warm afterwards (maybe becouse of the water coling) so how can it raise that fast when nothing seamed to happen from 3 to 3.4 only 1 ° celsius

with K6-2s, it's safer not to go over 2.7-2.8 volts. With your 3.5v, I think you did it. Sorry for that, but, if I'm not wrong, you just lost your buddy:(

ok thank you guess i have got to get a new cpu for the machine anyone who knows what cpu's i can juse i have up to 6 in multiplier so max must be 600 mhz without touching the fsb can i get a pentium lll for it or a amd k6-2+ ? or wich types can i juse (socket 7) i would like something with "free multiplier" becouse of my watercoling

P3 don't use Socket 7. The old Pentium 1 used the socket 7, maybe pentium 2, then Intel went to some other socket (or Slot), and AMD took the Socket 7. So the most powerful Socket 7 CPUs you'll find are AMD K6-3+ cpus. All K6-2 or 3 (and 2+ and 3+) will work in Socket 7

I would suggest you getting a new mobo "socketA" and a duron or an athlon cpu.
Its not worth getting a k6-2/3 they are the same prize as a duron but are slow as hell.

I've lost a few, and feel bad when I see another gone RIP. PM me, I've got a duron, and a shuttle AK32, I'll let go cheap if you need it.

Man. I just fryed my k6-2 450 too. but i dont know what i did to burn it... it was overclocked at 475 because i only got a HSF on it. and it froze up on me so i rebooted to reset to normal 450 and it just gives me a blank screen.. but on ebay the k6-2 450 are only like $15 so you can find a cheap replacement there.
Hey Sanch,
Did you up your voltage?
K6 cpus hate more voltage!!! (power)
90% of the time they will go within
200 hours if the voltage is more than
5% over spec!!!
60% of the time they will go within
400 hours if the voltage is more than
2 1/2% over spec!!!   !!!
K6 CPUs are mostly not good overclockers
if the volts are boosted.
(Use extream caution when overclocking K6 CPUs)
TheSanch

No, I left the voltage alone. I dont know what I did to fry it.
Thats Strange,
How high did you overclock it?
How long did it function properly?
TheSanch
10-21-01, 11:44 PM
well i overclocked it for maybe a couple of days and when i booted up in the morning, it just froze on a screen so i just rebooted and switched to normal 450 and nothing came on.
That sounds like what happens when a K6 goes!!!
They go first by locking up and them once
you restart because it locked, you find
that the computer will not post!!!

Yeah well I'm going to just go on ebay and buy one from there... unless, one of you guys has one laying around that you would like to donate to a fellow overclocker...
well email me if you do...

Thanks
I fried my 400 k6-2 on a P5A mobo. Had it clocked up to 550 running great with voltage up to ....can't remember. But I had up'd it just a little. :) Ran great for over a year like that, then last week BSOD and when I rebooted, no post nothing. And I was not monitoring temps as it ran under load at only about 29 degrees with the last HSF mod I had done.
I personally think it was due to the fact that my fan had fried and stopped working though! :( I could not here it die over the roar of the cloths drier which sit's about 5 feet behind me! YES, I have my computer in a laundry room.
That's what happens when you have a small 900 Square Foot home with only two main bedrooms and your wife has a beautifull little girl that kicks you out of the COMPUTER room. Sigh! :D
As for a good chip for the P5A max out at a k6-2 550, do not get the k6-3 or a K62-600. The 550 is the last stable chip on that motherboard. I know I've tried them all. As well make sure you run a good monitoring program that can shut the system down if temps go over a set degree...CPUcool is a good candidate for that.
As well upgrade to the last beta bios, it was a bonus when using mobo at higher clock settings. If you need it let me know I should have it on one of my backup cd's still. it's 1011 beta 4. You might even be able to find it on one of the ASUS FTP"S if you look hard enough.
Oh, BTW.....I just went out and upgraded. The cost of finding a new CPU for that mobo are to high. I spent 400 CDN and got an a7a266 and a 1.4 t-bird and it popped into my old case no problem. and I don't have to go by new ram and HD and all the rest for a little while longer. It would have cost me over 100 CDN to get a proper CPU for the P5A. To much if you ask me.
Well I hope this rant helps a little.
Orion
Some K6 chips will run for a good amount of time
but by upping the volts it will eventually die. :(
As for temps, the older CPUs are not a sensitive
to temprature as the newer ones are. (Tbirds, MP, XP...)
If you are going to overclock a K6 get one of the newer
models, and DO NOT TOUCH THE VOLTS UNLESS YOU
KNOW SOMEONE ELTS HAS DONE IT AND SUCEEDED!!!
I would not push them too hard either, they were all
pretty much rated at the MAX.
Sorry to hear alot of you lost your chips.

Ok... now listen to this... Ebay takes to long to get stuff so i went out to a local computer shop and picked up a K6-2 500. I put changed the voltage because the 450 needed 2.4 and this needs 2.2. alright.. i put it in the socket. and put the fan on... and nothing.... nothing happens..
what could be wrong???
1) Try clearing the CMOS
2) Try Setting the multiplyer lower to see if it loads at all
3) Double Check the volts/make sure they are correct
4) Check all of your connections power/HDD ect.
***5 applys to not having power at all...***
5) Try disconnecting power from the power supply for 10 min.
Does it make a buzzing noise but nothing happens?
-This indecates an overload or short.
-----
Try the above & post what happens.
Do the fans move at all?
TheSanch

I tryed clearing the CMOS, checked the power leds, i underclocked it, the fans spin, the HD spins but never does anything else.
TheSanch
10-23-01, 08:54 PM
oh, and i checked the voltage... Might i have fryed my Mobo?
Ok,
From what I am understanding,
The computer does not beep - telling us it finds the cpu
The computer does not post - commonly a CPU related error
The Fans Spin - so its not the power source
Has the computer ever posted, since you got the new chip?
-------
You are not going to want to hear/see this...
It is one of two things
1) The most common - A DEAD CPU :(
2) A SHOT motherboard :(
Can you return this chip?
I belive it may be a defect, ask for a replacement.
If it still doesn't work - Its time for a new mobo/chip.
I would get a TBird.
However, I do have some other ideas,
1) Is the mobo certified for the required multiplyer?
2) Is the FSB at the right speed?
3) Are the volts on target?
4) Pull the chip/read all specs carefully and redo the jumpers ect.
5) Do you see any core/mobo damage?
6) What happens with no CPU? The system should give out beeps
7) Get a replacement Chip from the retailor.
If I can further help please let me know,
Please tell us what you are doing and keep us
updated. We may find an "error".
oh, and i checked the voltage... Might i have fryed my Mobo?
It is extreamly likely!!!
Whats the volts supposed to be?
What was it set to?

I have no idea if it beeps...the system speaker cable got ripped out by a fan a while ago....
TheSanch

The volts supposed to be 2.2 on the new chip and 2.4 on the old. and i looked at the mobo manual and i set it exactly as pictured.. i doubled checked.

if you are interested, i have the epox MVP3C mobo. here is a link...

Going by what you have sayed,
It meets the criteria of a perfect chip!
But for some reason it is non-functional.
I'd say take this chip back for a replacement,
If it still doesn't work you are proboably stuck
with a blown mobo. :(
I have no idea if it beeps...the system speaker cable got ripped out by a fan a while ago....
Do you have Delta fans? :D
It would be a good Idea to get a replacement,
or soldier it back together.
They come in handy.

Would this help at all... I took out the chip and the phone rang... when i came back, i just turned it on. it functions exactly the same as when i have the chip in there.
You have a pretty good mobo
for K6 processors!
*I see that the chip IS supported so that is good.
Id say get a replacement chip,
if that doen't work you definetly have a
bad mobo.
I am leaning more towards a bad chip.
Have you checked all the busses?
Especially the one that powers the Video Card?
(Make sure it is inserted)
- I will check this thead again early tommaro
Good luck!!!

Ya, you will not be able to tell without a case speaker.

Alright. I went back put a new one in and it didnt work. I checked to see if it was video problem by switching the video cards. i know the video card has power because the fan on it spins. I put the speaker on there and sometimes it just goes on forever and other times it doesnt even beep once. I think it is the mobo. :(
ARGG.
i'm going to buy one on ebay to see if it is the mobo.
i dont know what else to do
Yes,
In this issue id have to say its the mobo. :( :(
How about getting a tbird system?
TheSanch

As you can tell already, I have Tbird system and I love it to death. I'm just trying to get a network going in my house so when friends come over we can play games and stuff together.
The thing with my Tbird system is that I cant overclock it. The Bios wont let me mess with the FSB and there is no multiplyer on the mobo. So there is no way to overclock it. I am overclocking my GeForce 2 MX400 though( only when i play games). well thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
well thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
No Prob,
Thats what we are hear for.

I would go for a cheapo Socket A mobo and a cheap Duron CPU, u'll get higher performance for lower price?
Well, not really
If you don't want to spend alot, I guess its fine.
(Besides is it that much cheaper - NO!)
Get a tbird,
I would take peek at www.pricewatch.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are lucky your old comp dident get screwed, or did it?
Thats a high vcore!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You must have one of those few models that work.
USE CAUTION!
IT WILL GO!

I dont have the cash to buy a new mobo plus cpu. I took a look at price watch and found a cheap mobo for my k62 450. i need to get a new powersupply though. i looked at those too and they arent that expensive. i'll save money in the long run.
With a K6 a generic 300W ATX would be perfect.
They dont need special power supplys.
If you have a Athlon or Tbird you will want a better
power supply.
I highly reccomend PC POWER & COOLING power equipment.

On my athlon i have a generic 300W power supply that came with my case. It works great. Why do I need a special PS?
The reason is mainly power quality.
Alot of probloms can result from this, just to name
a few:
System Lockups
Data Loss
Less component life
Incorrect voltage
PC Power & Cooling - Power Supply Devices
solve all these power related issues.
They have the BEST regulation in the computer
power supply market!
Not to mention the power quality is even better!!!
I cannot tell you how many cases have been related
to "POOR POWER QUALITY".
If there's one underappreciated system component, it's the power supply - Maximum PC
