for all you people doubting here is the deal from anandtech:

The first compatibility issue was the Black & White issue at 1600 x 1200 x 32, however the game worked fine at all other resolutions. Secondly, Madden 2002 would not run at all on the Radeon 8500.[B] ATI is aware of this issue and is promising a fix in the next version of their drivers which is due out later this month. [/]

While we tested all of the games on a Pentium 4 2.0GHz platform under Windows 2000, we verified compatibility with Athlon platforms and the Windows XP OS. The card ran fine on an EPoX KT266A motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ and it also ran fine with the supplied drivers under Windows XP. We have not completed extensive compatibility or stability testing under either of those situations but it was important to let you all know that in our limited experience, everything has been working fine. The card and drivers we tested showed worlds of improvement over the original Radeon 8500 silicon and drivers we previewed just two months ago; there were no more random crashes or issues with games.

yeah, well im just happy that new drivers will be coming out soon because i like ATI because not only do they keep prices down but i love the 2D on my rage fury pro, but i love the framerates of my geforce2.....(of course it isnt fair to compare the fps of the two seeing as the geforce had 2 years of technology improvement before it came out).....I like the products of both companies but i for some reason i like the underdog ATI......

I think ATI's problem in the past was not solving driver issues for one game but keeping up with the pace of new games with newer features coming out at an increasing rate.

ATI has made promises to get their team up to a cyclical release of updates..monthly or bi-monthly I believe. I don't own a GeForce 3 yet so I'm probably going to wait a bit and see what happens when the card is faced w/ some new game software..probably designed more around Nvidias gpu's and instruction sets than ATI's.

Either way, should prove to be some good competition down the road if ATI's team is up to the challenge. :)
