I'm going to be getting a Socket 478 MoBo that utilizes SDRAM. Either an ASUS P4B (1st choice) or an ABIT BL7. I realize I will be taking a performance hit in the area of gaming with the SDRAM, but that's of no concern to me.
I'm going with a Socket 478, because that appears to be the next socket for the P4 since they're not making any 423's anymore.

1.5GHZ is the entry level for the P4/478 socket, and entry level CPU's historically seem to have the most potential for overclocking. Knowing Intel, they'll probably reach about 2.5GHZ, and then change the socket again.

I'm a little confused about a 400MHz FSB MoBo using 133MHz RAM with a 100MHz CPU.

In the database, there's only a few entries for the 1.5GHz, P4/478. One fellow overclocked to (I guess) 133MHz to acheive a speed of 2GHz with the P4B. This doesn't seem out of line, there's simply not enough data to compare.

I suppose I need very good cooling. I'm running 4 hard drives and a CD-ROM, all SCSI Ultra-Wide in a full-tower. I have three case fans in the rear, and seven fans in the front, one case fan and two 5-1/4 bay fans (double 40mm's each). Two of my hard drives are removable, and they each come with a 40mm fan also.

I haven't been able to find any oversize CPU fans for the socket 478. I guess it's too new.
Does anyone know what other socket has the same tabs? 370? 423?

Any input on this scenario would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't be crushed if I couldn't overclock at all, since 1.5GHz is a big step up from an 800MHz P3. I'm either going to jump to 133MHz or leave it a 100MHz, nothing in between. That way the PCI & AGP & CNR (whatever that is) slots can remain at factory recommended speeds.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long message, but I wanted to squeeze as much pertinant info into it as possible.

sdram will make you take a hit in any app, i really recommend you wait till the Sis645(boards should be pretty cheap) chipset comes out on mobos and get that or go AMD....check out this P4 heatsink

if you must go sdram the P4B is an excellent choice, but RDRAM or DDR will give the P4 its due.....

an Athlon1.4+DDRmobo+DDR shouldnt run you more than 200$, and there are lots of oversized heatsinks out there for it.....thats my suggestion because an Athlon 1.4 will crush a P41.5 in almost anything......

Yea, I agree with Funnyperson. Even though you plan to OC it, there's no guarantee it'll go up to 2 Ghz, ESPECIALLY using SDRAM. I'd go for something more like a 1.7 or 1.8, you have a better chance of OCing it to 2 (and THEN it may beat the 1.4 Athlon). I'd also get one w/RDRAM, or the new VIA chipset with DDR. I don't think that 1.5'll OC much past 1.75 or 1.8. Of course, I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time....
