View Full Version : Fan Filters for Air Cooling?

I need some suggestions for what to use for filters on air-cooled systems:
I've got ducts going straight to my cpus from the case front and I'd like to filter out some of the junk( so fans don't jam!).

I don't want to special order expensive stuff either: I'd like to find some readily available material that I can use that won't restrict flow too much and won't cost a lot.

Any suggestions?

You could use either Pantyhose or go to a hardware store and buy some plastic black Screen like they use for porch or window enclosures and buy some thin wooden or metal strips and make your own filter by glueing the wood or metal into a small square. I tried both and I found that by using 3 layers of black plastic screening keeps the airflow higher than with pantyhose and the dust out.

The cost of plastic screening is extremely cheap and at a store like ACE or true value it will be less than a buck.

just add more fans and blow the dust out

Go to Home Depot and get a pack of these! They are called vent filters that go in your a/c registers. They are electrostatic filters about 1/8 inch thick and work great. They come in a pack of 12 and are 4 inches by 12 inches and can be trimmed easily to any size. They are made by Web products and can be checked out at
www.webproducts.com. Mine work great and just toss them when they get dirty. ;)

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Those filters are only about 5 bucks for a pack of 12 at the Depot.

they do make filters for case fans that are only like $2-3 and are made from aluminum mesh. I saw them at 2cooltek.com. In case you dont want to have to make something.

Also. you don't have to engineer anything if you don't want to get the filters in place. I use paper clips and clip the filter to fan shroud. Mebbee not pretty but quick and clean!
