I have a PC with a Radeon 9000 all-in-wonder card (second one in my sig) that I use to watch TV on a 19" LCD monitor either in a window or full screen. The card works well when watching live video with sound.
However, if I try to record a program and save it to a file, then play it back, the video portion only is played back without the sound. So either the sound is not being recorded with the video signal or for some reason it is not being played back.
I am using MPEG encoding
Catalyst 5.10 (new)
ATI Multimedia Center 9.08
Creative Audio PCI sound card

What am I doing wrong when recording video? I hear sound when live but not on playback.

Do you have output from your video card going to the Line In jack on your sound card?

Are you saving the raw MPEG stream or reencoding it?
Are you using the data pump (with the coax line) or are you using it as a video capture card? If you're using it as a video capture card, you'll have to set the audio input manually.

It connects to the CD audio input, and it's only used in video capture card mode (there's also a S/PDIF output, which is the raw audio data when there's surround sound in the MPEG stream). The audio output appears to be merely the audio input connectors through some buffer circuitry. If audio quality is a must, it's better to not pass the audio through the video card as it could pick up interference from the video circuitry.

Update:
I tracked down the problem to the DVD decoder from ATI. I bought the card off Ebay months ago and it did not have the install CD. That was not a problem as long as I watched live TV but became an issue when I tried to record programs. When I try to install the updated DVD decoder portion of MMC 9.08 it asks to verify your CD. ATI sells replacements for $12.99 but they are out of stock at the moment.
I downloaded the 21 day trial of BeyondTV and that works perfectly with video and audio. So its an ATI driver/decoder problem.

Thanks for your input, it looks like I will need to buy updated software if I want to use this computer as a DVR.
