Well, I "killed" it like 2 months ago when installing AS2, computer would give graphics error beeps when it booted, and when it did boot, the screen was full of artifacts.

Today, I just took it out of my closet because I was bored, so I cleaned it, and inspected for damage one last time.

This time something did catch my eye, one of the (don't know what it's called, a big plastic thing with copper wire wound around it, not a capacitor)

One of them seemed to be slightly green (copper oxide?), so I removed the green gunk.

I put the stock cooler back on, put it in the computer, and voila, it booted with no artifacts. I turned it off, and installed the AS2 again.

Again, it booted, no problems. OC to 600/410, no problems, on FS9 (don't have any other 3d programs in that HD)

Well, I don't know if it was the green gunk that was wreaking the havok, but at least it works now. Well I have to thank that "death", otherwise I wouldn't have gone to work, and wouldn't have the rig in my sig, only a p4 1.6 :) .

I don't know what to do with the card, I don't play anymore with that rig, so I'm thinking of selling it, maybe. The card is such a good OCer that maybe someone that wants to break 9600xt record could use it.

Well now I'm really confused. Booted the computer with the card in, and it was full of artifacts again "GRRRR". Now I'm really giving up on this card. Works for 30 mins fine, then dies again.

It may need removal and replacement of that coil you took the rust off of to be able to work fine. Depending on your situation it might not even be worth it.

Well I don't even know if it was rust, just some green gunk. I'll try it one more time later, if it doesn't work, then that means:

2 months sitting in closet : 30 Mins no artifact running :bang head

How the hell did you manage that....I cant break 540/344 without the thing taking a dump. I have ramsinks on it and that fatality copper VGA heatsink... Then again its completely stock also. Did you volt-mod your card or tweak some settings? If you could point me in a direction like that, it would be most appreciated.

It is by no means tweaked, voltmodded, etc, just plain OCing. The RAM is 2.5ns Hynix, very rare on 9600, which goes past 400 Mhz. That's the problem most 9600 have, cheap memory. It ¨was¨a vivo card, and they usually have nice memory.

I wanted to do once a voltmod, but chickened out. Imagine what it could have done with moderate bump.

I saw that I has samsung memory...and was all happy. But I did get one of the early runs of the card so go figure. Will have to just put up with it till i get a new card. But hey 8-11% increase is still good...just didnt need that beefy cooling at all.

*update*

decided to stick it back in, has been running 2 days with no problems. Succesful artifact free 600/400 3dmark 01 run. If it works for 3 months, then I might decide to sell it.

What a strange card.

Maybe an almost faulty capacitor? dunno, but I'm going to try and run it 600/400 24/7. Maybe God came down one night and fixed it.
