im trying to make backups of my pc game cd's with nero 6 ultra edition and i tried a couple out and it didn't work, like i can install, but then the problem is when i try to play with that disc, it just says it doesnt recognize the disc, so im assuming that nero did not make a 100% copy of the disc, is there something i should be doing while copying in nero with the settings to make it a 100% exact copy?
and yes these are my 100% legal games that i paid for...and i did a search and nothing came up so here i am

The main problem lies in that many disks are made with copy protection that Nero/other programs can't work with. Additionally, this knowledge may be used for illegal purposes, so don't be surprised if you don't get a lot of responses.
Try taking an image of the disk (as in an ISO). This may enable you to make proper burns.

i think theres an option when making a copy to make an image instead of copying "on the fly" do you think that would perhaps...do the trick?

download a "backup CD" game fix (AKA crack) that will let you play the game with a non original cd. or without the cd.
try www.megagames.com and go to the "game fixes section.
Very touchy subject.
If you want to preserve your game cd's, install it the game, then use a fixed exe to play without the cd. This is legal as long as the original discs remain in your posession.

one thing to try is virtual drives. i use VIRTUAL DRIVE 9 (http://www.farstone.com/home/ensite/index.shtml)
to make a mountable backup of my games, you can then burn these to disc or just keep them on ur HD. all you do then is mount them on the virtual drive and off you go. it doesnt work with all games tho......

There are currently only to programs that I'm aware of that can handle many of those copy protected disc(true 1:1 copy) and that is CloneCD/CloneDVD and Alcohol 120.

I usually pay the extra $5 (insurance against CD damage) at EB Games, then surfboard on the CD as I return home :D
AFAIK, game CD's are heavily compressed, making iso's won't work.

a proper ISO is a byte by byte copy of a CD a cd pressed or a cd copied can hold 700mb / 640mb, comrpession has nothing to do with it - the issue is the copy protection schemes used, many programs can not copy - hence the asking for cd when you want to play issue.
A game such a s Delta froce 2 had over sizing, if you copied the files to a harddrive you ended up with a 2g game instead of less then 700mb, but making a 1:1 copy would work with Adaptec burning software. (no others at the time) and took 30 mins to do.

Alcohol 120% for windows and the dd command in linux will back up any disk.

Nero might "not" be able to copy the copy protection and give you errors, the other programs can make proper images - you dont have to mount them after but they can be used to make immages
Another one that may work and old favorite of mine was CDRwin.

i personally use cloneCD with daemon tools to mount images for preservation purposes, i rip the images and then stick th disks away, and just change the mounted disks in windows.
