First off I am new here, so don't get too angry at my noobisms. well, I am currently building a gaming rig for myself, so including tax, and shipping on newegg... in my situation I have $1000 or so ... what would you buy? (I have a case, monitor and keyboard).

preferences:
-Stable OC ( plan on learning to do so )
-512mb ram is okay for now because I will upgrade it when I get some more $
-AMD 939
-nForce4-U/SLI
- >79gb sata
- newegg-able, area code 90210
- $1000 or so

what I came up with:

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813136152

XFX PVT70GUDF7 Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814150108

OCZ ModStream ATX/BTX/PCI Express/SATA 450W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817104154

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819103537

OCZ Platinum Revision 2 512MB 184-Pin DDR 400
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820146899

Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822148105

please, any comments on what I should buy would be greatly appretiated.

Hmm, I started to build a pimp rig via Newegg, but than I noticed something unusual about the price. Than I saw it...TAX! I guess California has to pay a tax with Newegg? Do you have to pay tax on all online orders?

you have to pay tax because newegg is located there...it's like that for any online site.

The online vendors only collect if they reside in the same state as you. Takes a lot of the fun out of Newegg for those in California. There are other online vendors. Many will beat the Egg on price on any given day. Shop around... You would probably be wise to check the vendors at Reseller Ratings. Some are fly by night if not outright crooks.

Monarch has competetive prices, but I personelly despise them, many other members like them though. I ordered from them once and it was a disaster.
They are located in Georgia.

im not liking monarch too much atm either
i ordered a 520w ocz for a crazy price in the middle of last week..the damn thing is yet to ship and iv already sold my current psu ~ come tomarrow im computerless :(

The 3000 will hold back your 7800GT a lot. My 3000+ Winchester holds back my 6800GT even...definitely go for a more expensive processor, since you've got $1000 to spend. I would also get a gig of value RAM instead of only 512.

I would suggest you get a Maxtor 16mb cache 200gig SATA hard drive for the same money.
If you can venture away from Newegg I'd try to get an 939 Opteron 146. Monarch had them for $175. I am not sure if they are in stock. They have twice the cache and overclock better than the Venice from preliminary reports.
I also vote for the OCZ 520 watt Powerstream.

d94-Don't panic. I have dealt with Monarch before. They never send a shipping notice but stuff is sent out promptly. I ordered a Powerstream too.

Monarch is either hit and miss, I dealt with them twice, after second time I will never deal with them again.

opterons are socket 939? not 940? also does the opteron 146 run programs faster than the +3200 Venice? how fast should a processor be to properly run a 7800gt w/o bottlenecking at the processor?

thanks for the info guys, I realy don't want to invest into something that I'll regret!

As a fellow southern californian i urge you, check out Mwave! If you're close enough sometimes amazing deals can be had since you can physically go to mwave's headquarters and pick up the items yourself. Saved me $50 going their instead of newegg but their prices aren't always the best so shop around.

Yes, socket 939 Opterons are available. They're a New Thing.

Yes, the new Opteron's are 939's with 2x the cache of a Venice. I seen some clocking up to 2.9GHz at modest voltages. While there are not a lot of results out there it looks like they scale better than the Venice.

(Copy and pasted from other post, because both people had budgets of $1000, and wanted gaming and some OC)

EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Motherboard $97.99
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+* (2.0GHz) 939pin OEM $130.81
Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160GB $76.87
BFG Technologies GeForce 7800 GT OC $365.00
Forton AX500-A $79.49
Antec Super LANBoy Aluminum $73.88
Corsair 2x512MB Value Series $84.60
BenQ DW1640 Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer $38.99
Artic Silver 5 $5.35
Thermalright XP-120 $48.99
Panaflo 120x38mm High Speed $15.95

Total: $1017.92

I used www.pricegrabber.com to get these prices. Some are from actbuy.com, ewiz.com, newegg.com, and every other vendor.com.

The 3200+ may hold back the 7800GT, but for now you can save up for a X2 3800+ in the future, or even cut down to the 6800GT if you want to save money.
