Im making a computer from some old dell parts 2.8c northwood s478, 1 gig generic pc3200 ram, hdds, drives, and video card.

Im planning on buying a new case, psu, mobo, and hsf. I hope to overclock and do some gaming.

Is there anything im missing or anything better I should get? Im trying to keep to the total below 300.

Fortron 500w power supply or a OCZ Powerstream 520. what graphics card was it? i would get the Asus P4c800-E Deluxe if you can get it but Abit Boards are fine. Case is ugly IMO, get a P160 or the new P150 coming out soon. for the P150, check out www.silentpcreview.com

Geforce fx 5200  The case isnt too important right now so i might change it later. Do i really need such a powerful psu? the one im using right now is a 250w.

250 watts is rather low. If you put that CPU/mobo, a large RAM, a decent video card, and a hard drive the PSU would be screaming in no time. If that came with the Dell you got, toss it out. Most computers sold like that often have PSU at bare minimum and would be hard pressed to work on any computer upgrades.

I'd invest in a decent PSU first.

This is the cheapest PSU that I would recommend (see below). I just built two computers using the same AX450-PN and they are doing quite well. The IS7 will be fine for your Northwood, but if you later decide to upgrade to a Prescott, it might have trouble keeping up. On the other hand, you you upgrade at this point you should go socket LGA775, PCI-E, and DDR2.

Would you consider buying a case with no window and modding it yourself??????
