u3 flash drives

i've tried searching on this, and i still dont really get it. i understand that they're supposed to be flash drives that are capable of running programs from, the thing i dont get is that my flash drive (512mb sony microvault) isn't to my knowledge u3-compatible, and yet i run programs off it all the time (firefox, openoffice, etc) anybody know anything about it?
